Warren Frump asked:

As soon as street fighter turned MMA pro, Kimbo Slice, was given the headlining fight on America’s very first prime-time MMA event, everyone has been trying to get a fight against him. And the minute after his lackluster victory over James “the Colossus” Thompson (some would say defeat), Ken Shamrock declared that he would be the perfect opponent for Kimbo Slice as he has discovered some flaws in his game.

Brett Rogers threw a fit and called out Kimbo Slice the same night of CBS EliteXC event. Since then it’s the MMA matchup everyone’s been expecting. Rumor has it Elite XC is afraid Rogers would actually beat Kimbo, and so they announced a fight against Ken Shamrock instead.

Shamrock has lost five of his last six MMA fights. He hasn’t won a fight since fighting Kimo Leopoldo in 2004. So does he stand any chance against the up and comer Kimbo Slice?

The answer is definitely, if he plays it smart. For the past few years Shamrock has demonstrated a vulnerability to knockouts, being knocked out way too easily and way too often. But his submissions are still fantastic, thanks to his wrestling background. Kimbo Slice, as we’ve all seen, has virtually no sense of submission grappling in MMA.

Kimbo Slice, as much of a draw as he is, is still just Elite XC’s sideshow. People love Kimbo win or lose, and they’re fascinated by his persona and story. He’s been pushed as a representative of MMA, a prodigy, a sob story. But we shouldn’t worry about what kind of championship he wins; Kimbo Slice is what he is, and that’s an entertaining fighter.

Jack Krohn asked:

There is little doubt among professionals of the effectiveness of pepper spray. Even “DOG” the bounty hunter, and “Stephanie Plum” the femme fatale fictional bounty hunter of Janet Evanovich’s best sellers use or carry some. More and more professional police departments use and carry some form of OC spray. Almost all security companies have their guards use and carry it.

Pepper spray uses Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) which comes from cayenne pepper. Defensive sprays are measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU’s) a common measure of a products’ “hotness”. A jalapeno pepper has an SHU of 5000, a habanero pepper 300,000 and a typical spray will be in the 2 million SHU range.

A short burst in the face of an attacker from an OC spray canister causes shortness of breathe, temporary blindness from the eyes actually closing, choking and coughing. Not to mention the pain. The natural reaction from a victim of a pepper spray ****** is to rub the spray, which just makes it worse, and now his hands are burning. There is no permanent damage to the attacker.

All of these attributes apply to pepper gel. But there’s more. The new pepper gel has an extended range of up to 18 feet. Most pepper sprays have a range of 6-12 feet. And the delivery system carrying the pepper is a gel instead of a mist or liquid stream, the gel is more likely to be on target. Pepper gel has a stronger concentration of pepper and sticks like glue when it hits the target-the attackers face.

–Increased range.

–Higher concentration of pepper for great stopping power.

–Greatly increased accuracy.

–Sticks like glue.

When you are being attacked and your life is on the line these factors are huge. That is why pepper gel is the best non lethal self defense weapon for you. Carry it in your car, your purse, have one at home, in the office because you never know when you’ll need it.

After all if it is good enough for Stephanie Plum and “DOG” the bounty hunter and thousand of police professionals why wouldn’t it be good enough for you?

If you think crime can only happen to the other guy you are wrong. The “other guy” is thinking the same thing and YOU are that “other guy”. There is a reason why they call it self defense. You have to protect yourself, your family, your home and business!!

Chris Pizzo asked:

While some see Driving While Illegal (DWI) as another issue in the illegal immigration debate, for police officers around the country it is just another potential danger. Every time a police officer gets out of a cruiser for a routine traffic stop, he or she isn’t safe until it is over.

The Town of Framingham, Massachusetts, located twenty miles west of Boston, was recently in the news when a local paper profiled an illegal immigrant who says he lives in fear of being pulled over by police and the ensuing possibility of deportation. Sure he’s in the country illegally, employed illegally, and driving with an expired foreign driver’s license, but he was painted as the victim. Millions of illegal immigrants take to the roads every day, which is dangerous enough; to make matters worse, there are also violent criminals within the subculture. A traffic stop puts officers in a dangerous close combat situation, and only real combat self defense can protect them.

Police officers represent the state, and illegal immigrants have already shown they have no respect for our government or laws. Combine this disrespect with the fear of being deported and a traffic stop could turn into a volatile situation. While traffic stops have always been dangerous, the illegal immigrant issue provides us a chance to review tactics and training for full time and auxiliary police officers. Proactive self defense is the best way to prevent injuries and the escalation of violence.

When an officer approaches a vehicle he doesn’t know what he’s going to encounter, and if the situation doesn’t quickly come under his control it can be deadly. In 2006 alone 15 officers died from being hit by cars and another 45 died in auto accidents, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. An officer is all alone and even if help is minutes away a lot can happen, and weapons can quickly become irrelevant. Officers need an advantage in a close quarters combat (CQC) situation, and combat martial arts can give them that advantage.

Being a police officer has to be one of the hardest jobs in the world. For the men and women who put on the uniform it is a daily struggle; they have to be both a friendly public servant and a vigilant warrior, and for all those who praise them there are many relentless critics. For police officers it is about enforcing the law and protecting the community, and the best way to do that is to use self defense training that lets them take a suspect down quickly. If an experienced officer sees a situation beginning to deteriorate, he or she needs self defense training to take control of the situation quickly and effectively. Police officers don’t have the option to run away like civilians, and giving the bad guys the first shot isn’t an alternative either. A traffic stop is just another dangerous part of a cop’s routine; with the right training, though, they can all make it home at the end of their shifts.

Gary Simpson asked:

For more than 30 years I have been running specialized self defence courses and seminars. Over that time I have shown thousands of people how to protect and look after themselves.

Increasing personal safety ALWAYS commences with awareness.

Since most men may be attacked in almost any situation and for a wide-ranging variety of reasons I offer the following advice.

Here is a list of ten simple things that you can do immediately that will increase your safety:

1 – Most men get involved in physical trouble as a result of saying something rude, offensive, tactless, stupid or hurtful. Controlling what comes out of your mouth can keep it in good shape. Think before you speak.

2 – If a fight breaks out in a bar – leave immediately. Go before all the drunks and brawlers start swinging chairs, bottles, glasses and punches. A “free for all” usually starts with just two protagonists. Innocent bystanders often get hit. Those who leave all the fools to bash each other do not.

3 – NEVER attempt to mediate an argument between a man and a woman. Both will cease arguing or fighting with each other and turn on you – the common enemy. If you fear for the woman’s safety, call the police.

4 – Understand that many people these days have a cocktail of drugs and booze in their veins. It makes them argumentative, aggressive and “Mike Tyson-esque.” Avoid people who are “off the planet.” Even a casual glance at them can set them off. Leave them with their own demons.

5 – Don’t make the fatal mistake of thinking that ANYBODY fights “fair” any more. Those days are over – they have been since the John Wayne era! Expect multiple attackers, weapons, possibly both.

6 – The cemeteries are full of dead heroes. Don’t add to their number. Run if you can. There is no shame in avoiding a fight. In fact, running away is smart.

7 – Recognize objects in every room of your home that could be used as makeshift weapons. Home invasion is a growing curse these days due to the unwillingness of our governments to protect their citizens.

8 – THIS IS MORE OF A LEGAL WARNING: Understand that if you allow yourself to be placed in a “compromising” position with a woman, particularly one who is “under-age,” then the woman’s version of events will usually be believed over the man’s version. Do not allow yourself to get into such situations.

9 – Negotiation is a far higher art form than physical confrontation. Do anything reasonable to avoid a fight. NOTHING good ever comes out of conflict. War is proof of that.

10 – When all else fails, your back is to the wall and there is absolutely no other alternative left remember… “it is better to be tried by twelve than carried by six.”

Remember my opening words – “increasing personal safety ALWAYS commences with awareness.” Increase your awareness, mind your manners, know your surroundings and you will certainly improve your safety.
