The first answer is whatever works. Whatever is effective is good self defense. Whatever gives you the greatest chance of survival is good self defense. That being said, there are a few factors that need to be considered.

Think of the worst possible scenario. Chances are you will be attacked when your assailant feels he has a distinct advantage. That means you must assume he will be larger, determined, armed and has friends. Anything you do must account for these real possibilities. Until you are proven other wise, chances are you won’t know for ure until it’s too late.

Next, you need to consider your environment. Asphalt, ice, snow, jungle, beach, the woods or your living room, each situation presents a unique set of circumstances. You need to react in a way that takes all of this into consideration. Simple foot work done in the correct manner will account for every possible scenario.

Then you have to consider yourself. Chances are you will appear to be a good mark. This means you’re older, smaller, injured or otherwise distracted. Remember Murphy’s law- what can go wrong will go wrong. You also have to consider what happens to your body when you are placed under hormone induced stress or fear. You get tunnel vision; you loose control of your fine motor skills. You experience auditory exclusion and as your hear rate increases your ability to perform even the most simple techniques.

Instinctive and Convulsive

Time is of the essence, you need to cause as much damage to your target and as little damage to yourself. If you’re using protective gear in your training, this will cause a problem (unless you are constantly wearing hand wraps). Techniques that take a lot of time just don’t cut it. Methods that cause you to wait just don’t cut it. You have to inflict as much damage as fast as possible. Lead with speed, follow with power and take bits and pieces away from your assailant as you cause more damage and injury. The techniques you use should allow to hit anywhere on your targets body and cause little or no damage to you. You must react in a way that allows you to keep your assailant off balance and build momentum until he’s no longer a threat.

Do Your Worst, Fast and First

According to close combat legend W.E. Fairbairn, you need attack with “vehemence and artifice”. This simply means be as nasty and as sneaky as possible. Don’t wait to escalate- just dominate. The quicker you can cause damage, the faster you can inflict even greater damage. Just don’t wait. There is no room for second chances. Self defense is self preservation.

Plan for the Worst and Hope for the Best

When you train, it’s for your worst nightmare. The guy who just got out of prison or the junkie who doesn’t care what belt you have. Criminals just want what you have, plain and simple. You have to plan for the absolute worst case scenario. Also, you should have a little nasty surprise for your would be attacker. Empty hand techniques are nice but WEAPONS AND TECHNOLOGY beat empty hands time and time again. If empty hand techniques were all they were cracked up to be, there would be no need for firearms, knives or close quarter weapons. It’s better to have it and not use it than need it and not have it. Even old school martial artists always had an “ace up their sleeve” so to speak. The point is, empty hand is a strategic last resort. At its best, empty hand self defense is designed to allow you to fight with a weapon or at least create an opportunity to secure one. Because at the end of the day, it’s not a matter of who’s right, just who’s left.

4. Learn some striking points. If you get into a stranglehold fight with and an assailant learn where to hit him with the most effect. Every one has pressure points or areas of vulnerability. Skull bones at the temple for example are weak and are relatively easy to *****. The nose and eyes are always a good choices. A blow across the nose could break it and an eye gouge is still one of the easiest ways to break away from an assailant.

5. Be aware-Walk with a sense of self confidence and awareness of your surroundings. The bad guys watch for seniors and women who are distracted.

6. Carry some self defense products. Stun guns, pepper sprays, personal alarms and tasers are meant to give you time to get away from a dangerous situation and seek help. They all do that in indoor or outdoor assaults.

Many women are turned off by the idea of carrying a folding knife or pocketknife. Carrying a knife everyday is not only practical for utility purposes, but there are several “non-lethal” self-defense techniques that you might not be aware of. Did you know that your knife could actually make your punches several times more effective? To demonstrate this, keep the folding knife in the closed position. Now simply grasp the closed folding knife with a closed fist and leave a couple of inches of the handle exposed at the bottom of your clenched fist. If you were to punch an attacker in the head or face with the exposed piece of your knife handle in a self-defense situation, it would hurt them much more than a standard punch. If you are interested in this self-defense method, I especially recommend the “Striking pommel” feature that many knife companies offer for this specific purpose on their folding knives.

Kicking or striking a man in the groin is often times though of as taboo. I would advise the reader though, that there are few self-defense tactics that are as effective as this one. If you’re being attacked by a man and have the ability to strike him in the groin, do it! Doing this numerous times should take the attackers focus off of trying to harm you and onto the horrible pain that they have in their groin.

Never underestimate the power of the eyes and of vision. Anything that you can do to disrupt an attacker’s eyesight is in your best interest. This can mean either punching or striking in the eye, or throwing something at your attackers’ face in hopes of taking their focus off of you and unto the object flying rapidly at their face. Take advantage of any opening that you see when the attackers’ eyes switch focus off of you and unto the diversion that you threw at them.

Pepper spray can be a very powerful self-defense tool for women. There are many convenient shapes and sizes that pepper spray bottles come in. You can purchase a canister of pepper spray that looks exactly like a pen and keep it neatly inside of your purse for the purpose of self-defense. Keep in mind that such a small container will probably not have the velocity or shooting power as a large pepper spray bottle like the ones seen on “Cops” or “Dog The Bounty Hunter”. I recommend purchasing a large container of pepper spray with much more shooting power for your home or where portability is not an issue.

The concepts in this article should come in handy if you are ever in a situation that requires physical self-defense. Applying these concepts in a real-life scenario could be the difference between life and death.

If you are truly trying to master the art of self defense, then you must be able to use anything as a weapon. This article discusses several ways that you can use your keys as a tool for self protection.

But, first-things-first – you must begin by avoiding or ignoring the dangerous strategy of placing the keys between your fingers! I’ve discussed this in other articles, but suffice it say for our purposes here that, whoever came up with this logic, was never in a real fight where he had to attempt to use his own strategy!

There are, however, several simple but highly effective tactics where your keys can be used to control the fight and/or cause a significant amount of damage. The following 4 strategies are offered as a means of helping you to expand, not only the number of techniques in your skill set, but to assist you in developing the advanced skill of strategic thinking.

1) Stabbing and slashing. Instead of trying to fight with, and get your keys between your fingers under the pressure and stress of an attack, simply hold a single key the same way you would to use it in a lock. This really is the most natural, and therefor the strongest grip.

From here, the stabbing, ripping, and scraping/cutting damage you create will be much more powerful and debilitating than with the key sliding around between your fingers and digging into the webbing of your hand with each stroke!

2) Distracting. Using this strategy, you can do everything from showing the keys and threatening to throw them at him, to simply dropping them to draw his attention away from what he was doing. The key is to do something that opens a hole in his defenses so that you can enter.

3) “Sight-Removing.” This involves tossing the keys into his face to shut down his vision. He will either close his eyes, or turn away momentarily to protect himself from the pieces of metal bouncing off of his face! You can then, as in the “distracting” strategy above, take advantage of his momentary disability, and either attack or escape to safety.

4) Flailing, Regardless of whether your keys are on a single ring, or attached to something else – like a Kubotan, self defense keychain – you can wait until he is close enough before flailing the keys at the sensitive areas of his face, neck, and exposed skin areas.

The key to success with weapons is to be able to use them in ways that the opponent has never seen before. While this makes your training more challenging, just keep in mind that, if you try anything that you assailant has seen and prepared for, you will have a more difficult time defeating him. As the saying goes, “If it’s easily thought of, he’s thought of it too.”

I was recently visiting some friends in El Paso TX. A large group of us met at a new club and I ended up meeting several new people that night. One of these guys was named “John” (for the sake of this article)

John had had quite a few to drink that night and it seemed like the more he had, the more talkative he became.

He told me that he didn’t like the bouncers. I had to agree with him that they seemed a little too intense with the black BDU pants and German style tanker boots.

It seemed everyone in the establishment was having a good time and staying out of trouble.

I saw John again later that night. I noticed he was carrying something in his hand which was down by his side. He was carrying a handful of wooden skewers. He had somehow gotten them from behind the bar and was walking around with them.

“Why do you have those?” I asked.

“If the bouncer asks for my ID I’ll ******* stab him.”

I found out much later that John had a serious criminal record and was lying low for the moment. He was actually dodging a five year sentence that he was set to begin serving earlier in the year. He skipped out on his bail.

The bouncers were walking around checking IDs for most of the night and would have gotten a terrible surprise by asking John for his. I don’t know that he even had one.

In this particular situation, the bouncer may have spotted the threat because he has dealt with these situations before. Perhaps he has gone through these situations mentally and has prepared. Or maybe he would have been turned into shish kebab.

Most of us are not bouncers but the threat exists for everyone. Start your training immediately. Many situations can be avoided if a threat is spotted and then avoided. For those that can’t be avoided, it’s great to have a basic set of combat skills to fall back on.
