Heather Richards asked:

Overall, the most common reason that a woman would need to defend herself is in the case of violent sexual attack. According to George Mason University research, 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced sexual assault or ****! One-third of all women in the world seem to be an extraordinary number. In some countries where women’s rights have not evolved, one-third of adolescent girls report “forced sexual initiation”. One report publicized in 2000 claimed that more than 60% of victims in 7 countries knew their attacker. Another study performed in 2001 found that 24.7% of women interviewed in 8 different countries reported being the victim of sexual violence by the person they were dating.

We rarely expect to be assaulted by our friend or lover, but this is the scenario all too often. There seems to be no way of predicting or preventing this situation, and so our only hope is to know how to defend ourselves. Since the possible situations vary greatly, from unacceptable sexual advances to extreme cases of aggressive and violent attack, there are also many different techniques to deter an attack or defend yourself physically.

Techniques range from simple eye-contact and straight-forward verbal response to training in martial arts techniques. In general, physical self defense techniques for women should be a little different from techniques taught in most martial arts classes. Instructors must consider that a woman will be smaller than, and not usually as strong as her attacker. Techniques must also revolve around possible scenarios, teaching you to make the most of your position and get the upper hand on your assailant. They must also keep it simple, nothing too technical. This is not because women can’t easily learn technical martial arts, but because anyone is not going to be calm enough to execute a technical move efficiently in such a high-stress situation.

W.O.W (Women Only Workout) claims that by physically defending herself against an attacker, 85% of women will escape the situation and 50% of the time all it may take to avoid an attack is to yell or scream. However, I wouldn’t rely on a 50/50 chance of survival, so it’s important to find a self defense technique that will work for you. With all of the options available, there is something for everyone, some classes even incorporate Yoga (see related article) to help train their students in self-discipline and enable them to have a clear head when attacked. Motivational seminars about confidence and empowerment can also be helpful. If you choose to train in a martial arts studio, it’s important to choose one that is not oriented toward competition (unless you have such goals), those that advertise self defense directly would be best. Sometimes your local police department may offer classes as well.

Since you are already online, it’s a good idea to start your research here. You may want to watch videos, read How-To articles, order a book or purchase an eBook; there is an abundance of information at your fingertips already. Please feel free to return and let others know about your experiences!

Andrew Curtiss asked:

The U.S. Military; often looked at as Americas finest. We see them everyday on the television defending America from terror abroad. They are skilled in fighting in all forms and fashion; right down to hand to hand combat. Aren’t they? Many veterans today who have had the opportunity to see the core training of today’s military aren’t so sure that today’s soldiers are fighting smarter and not harder. This article is about martial arts in the military and how today’s military could possibly be trained to be killed instead of being trained to kill. Many see Hand to Hand combat training as the core of being a soldier. Hand to hand combat is the most primitive form of combat; it is also the core exercise for building aggression and “Warrior Spirit”. Let’s face it who wants to have an Army of “mam-bi pambi’s”; who are too scared to engage the enemy in close quarters if necessary. It’s no secret anyone can shoot the enemy from 800 meters away; but if all a soldier is trained to do is shoot at distant targets they won’t know what to do when the enemy catches them off guard or in ambush.

Hand to hand training is the center of a warrior. It is the root of what makes the warrior who he or she is. The warrior or soldier is stripped of everything but what they were born with and then taught to protect themselves in the worst situation possible…WAR. Unarmed combat training brings out the very best in soldiers. The aggression, heart, determination and the will to survive are brought out to peak levels. It is with the skills and fundamentals learned in Hand to hand that soldiers also learn to apply in other aspects of soldiering.

Many enthusiasts who are in the martial arts outside the military and who have interest in the military often wonder,”What type of hand to hand is taught?” I can say from experience that the concept of Hand to hand has changed dramatically since my days of service. When I arrived to Basic training in July 1996 the Army hand to hand combat was silly, to say the least. Drill Sergeant was teaching us by all means what appeared to me as Tae Kwon Do and greco Roman Wrestling. This is not what a soldier needs to be learning. The techniques were just not practical. As the years passed and America’s now most popular sport began to develop; the Ultimate Fighting Championship had a great affect on the training being taught to soldiers. Due to popularity of the 18- 34 male populous; the Army began to develop it’s hand to hand program to mirror the sport. Not only was it great exercise for Physical Training; it was great for recruitment as well.

I recently went out to Barnes and Nobles to look at the selection of martial arts books. I came across the book H2H Modern Army Combatives. as I looked through the book I noticed that the entire contents of it were mixed martial arts techniques. There were double leg take downs. Double leg take downs are techniques that when done on hard ground will cause injury to the person executing the technique. One of my favorite techniques was the soldier clinches with his adversary then grasps the adversaries head. The soldier then falls to his back with the enemy on top and in his guard. These are not techniques that are going to help a soldier survive a hand to hand confrontation. The last thing a soldier wants to do in close quarters combat is injure him/ her self or be on the ground and especially on their backs. Unarmed combat is a SURVIVAL skill. It is a last stitch effort to regain a weapon and survive. There are no weight classes, time limits, rounds or rules and therefore mixed martial arts techniques are poor choices to train soldiers in.

I knew that the Army was headed for disaster with combatives when in 2004 in the Zabul province in Afghanistan I was in the 3rd Special Forces, leading a cordon element with 10th Mountain soldiers on a raid. I had several of the roads going into the target village sealed and blockaded by 10th Mountain Division soldiers. I was personally overseeing one check point when I noticed two of my subordinates had a vehicle stopped and were attempting to extract the occupant. The occupant struggled, and that is when the young Private leaped into the air wrapped both legs around the rather small Afghan and pulled him to the ground on top of him. I quickly ran over and ripped the confused Afghan man off from him. I immediately restrained him and then asked what the private was doing. His reply was,”Combatives Sergeant!”. He explained to me that he was trying to ,”Tap him out”. I was furious at the level of ignorance displayed while on duty by this soldier. Someone in his unit had trained him to react this way. Not only was it completely wrong for him to react that way; it was deadly. His partner was not pulling security either. His counterpart was cheering him on.

A combative program should be complete. It should augment the unit S.O.P.s. Combatives should be practical efficient and simple to learn. Combatives are a last stitch effort and should not be treated as a game. Although many generals love the idea of non lethally submitting the “Bad guy”; and they love the way they can market mixed martial arts training to the 18 to 34 crowd. Unarmed combat is dirty ugly and mean. Unfortunately although it is great the military is spending more time training in unarmed techniques. They need to train the right principles and techniques. This is combat not a sport. I am afraid that the state our troops are in now leaves them trained to be killed, and not trained to kill. Commanders wake up!

hand to hand combat

Jack Krohn asked:

Okay so you have made a conscious decision to get a non lethal self defense weapon instead of a handgun. Now what?

Non lethal self-defense weapons are gaining in popularity because they are effective against attacks. Martial arts and other self-defense courses are great to learn, but for many people, they take too much time to learn and can be expensive. You are not always going to have the opportunity to use learned self-defense skills. Non lethal self defense weapons such as stun guns, pepper sprays, tasers, etc. are a more practical way to go.

Before you go out and purchase a non lethal self-defense weapon you should consider some of the following points:

o WHICH IS BEST FOR YOU? Study and learn as much as you can. See what weapon is going to be right for you both on a physical and mental level.

oLEARN HOW TO USE IT. Having a self defense weapon and not knowing how to use it can injure you as easily as it can hurt your assailant. Once you have chosen a self-defense product, ask for proper instructions on how to use it, or take a course in using the products properly. Then PRACTICE using it until it becomes second nature.

oIS IT LEGAL IN YOUR AREA?You don’t want the embarrassment of being harassed by local law enforcement. Take the time to see if you are allowed to carry the self-defense product you have chosen. Some may need permits or other permission before you can carry them around in public.

oDON’T OVERCARRY – If pepper spray is going to give you the jump you need to defend against an assailant, then there is really no need to carry air guns, slingshots or a taser. When the time comes to use your weapon there cannot be any indecision as to which to use.

Self defense products can get you out of a bad situation – there is no doubt about that. Unless you know what you need, how to use that product, and the legality of it, you may be getting into trouble. You can actually do yourself more harm that good by not doing your homework before you invest time and money into self-defense products. They can save your life, your money and provide you with peace of mind.

Jack Krohn asked:

Unfortunately, violence against women is a centuries old reality.

According to Bureau of Justice statistics 17 percent of women can expect to be ***** in their lifetime. In 2004 for every 1000 people there is one **** or sexual assault, two assaults with injury and 2 robberies-that’s a one in five chance that you are going to be next.

Statistics show that every two and a half minutes someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. And while the numbers show an increase, the scary part is there are still 39 percent of ***** in 2002 that went unreported for a variety of legitimate reasons ranging from embarrassment, fear, or shock.

A self defense class should be part of every woman’s education. Why can’t it be taught in school?

Women’s self defense classes and training are available in books, seminars, DVD’s, and community classes. Practically every community offers some type of self defense class. They are available from the YWCA to the local police department, church groups to community organizations especially in college communities where assaults are generally higher. The opportunities are there. But so is the apathy. To me it is mind boggling at the lack of interest in this topic.

A class or course in self defense cAn prepare women for what may be inevitable-an assault at some point in their lives. A 6 hour DVD course in the comfort of your own home will teach you the basic skill set needed to prevent or cure the common assault by kicking an assailant’s ****.

They can learn how to build confidence, how to use keys as a weapon, how to use verbal self defense, simple postures and ways to act can prevent an assault from becoming fatal. The list goes on and on.

SIX HOURS to learn the basics to cure the common assault. Take a class in pepper spray use, martial arts, how to fight dirty, even knowing how to behave: these are the basic tools needed to survive an attack. Do it at home, do it at church, do it at school, do it at your police department, do it in your community center, do it in your dorm-JUST DO IT.

And then once you have learned the skill set, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE Start learning at an early age and continue thru your life with practice.

SIX HOURS to cure the common assault. Is that too much?

self defense

Pete Kauffer asked:

Oftentimes one is grabbed from behind in a self-defense scenario. Both arms can be pinned at the sides and rendered useless. The victim can be lifted off the ground. In this article we will discuss 2 self-defense techniques to escape a two arm low waist grab.

Martial arts teaches numerous ways to escape or defend a grab from behind. If both arms are pinned at the sides it may seem that there is no defense. However, at this point the body’s other natural weapons can come into play. The victim needs to think clearly and act quickly and forcefully.

One martial arts self-defense technique, whether on the ground or picked up off the ground is to throw the head back into the attackers face or nose. The back of the head is extremely hard and has quite a bit of surface area for contact. Throwing the head back forcefully and landing a solid blow can many times leave an assailant defenseless with a broken nose or jaw.

A second martial arts self-defense technique, whether lifted off the ground or not, involves kicking the attacker. Even if the arms are pinned the feet and legs are free to strike. A kick with the heels to the shins, knees or groin can cause enough pain to the assailant to release a victim.

A stomp with the heel on the top of the attacker’s foot if not picked up can cause severe pain by breaking the small bones in the top of the foot. When released a victim is able to perform any number of martial arts or self-defense techniques to counter. A punch, a kick or an elbow can be carried out if necessary. Once released a victim can flee as well.

Jack Krohn asked:

There is something to be said about learning from an expert no matter what field you’re in. This is not to knock the barber in the neighborhood who teaches self defense classes on the side he is just trying to make a living. And when it comes to your self defense and the self defense and your loved ones you want to learn from the best there is.

We have assembled 24 self-defense DVDs put together by some of the best experts in the world. From learning the very basics of Jeet Kune Do (JKD) or ‘streetfighting’ to learning much more advanced skills from Army Delta Force and Navy Seal trainers we have you covered.

These training DVDs teach you everything from how to overcome tremendous odds when fighting more than one person or faced with a much larger opponent to disarming and disabling an armed attacker. Most of these self defense training DVDs are based on some type of martial art but require no special skills or training. They are equally good for men and women, seniors and kids.

I have always preached that basic self-defense tactics should be taught in elementary schools to are kids at early ages. That way as they grow older and continue to practice they will become proficient in how to defend themselves. And as strange as this may seem I have always thought that a family who learns these skills together as a family would form a stronger bond. But that is just me.

A Self Defense Course ought to be at the basis and foundation of any self defense strategy. On top of that comes knowing how to use and carrying self defense products.

So get off your couch get a little exercise learn something new today and learn how to defend yourself and your family. Who knows when the time will come for you to use this. Chances are it will come.

When are going to start?

Rob Wumout asked:

According to many, the history of martial arts is as old as human existence and civilization itself. Research into martial arts history shows that martial arts has its presence in Mesopotamia, otherwise referred to as the cradle of civilization.

It is now known that martial arts existed in some form in China and the Far East, even before civilization reached these countries. Many of the principles of this ancient art are practiced even today.

Trading Could Have Started It Off

Communications between different countries in Asia existed through channels of trade and conquests. Thus it was not long before it reached India where it spread with growing popularity and got mingled with concepts of health, philosophy and religion.

As martial arts spread its wing, a lot of secrecy also started to get attached to it. The more people knew its strengths, the more it was shrouded with layers of mystery and secrecy. This has resulted in much of the origin or martial arts remaining unknown to the general public. It is known that the origin of Buddhism as a religion, started to spread from India and monks traveled far and wide especially to China.

Travelers were believed to have used martial arts as a way to defend themselves during their travel and helped the art to be introduced to China. Once the art was introduced in China it really blossomed. Of course the popularity of this art took centuries to grow and involved plenty of practitioners and maestros.

History Of Martial Arts

According to the Chinese however, the credit for the development of this art is attributed to Bodhidharma (an Indian name) who left India in search of enlightenment and reached a monastery in China around 520 A.D. The monastery situated in the Songshan mountains is the modern day’s Shaolin Temple. Bodhidharma, who was known by his Chinese name Ta-Mo introduced Zen Buddhism to the Chinese. He aimed to help the Chinese monks to retain their physical strength and health and taught them physical exercises which were essentially martial arts.

As is evident, martial arts became an essential component for the maintenance of physical health, philosophy and also religion. as the art grew in China, which soon came to be known as the home of martial arts, gradually spread to other Asian countries like Japan, Korea and Philippines. In modern times, all these countries have their own individual traditions of martial arts, though heavily influenced by Chinese principles.

No matter their origin, the essential objective of learning and practicing martial arts is to defeat an opponent physically or for self defense from any physical threat. Additionally many martial arts and closely linked to various religious and philosophical beliefs of Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism or Shinto, Confucianism, and even Islam (by Chinese Muslims).

Imran Al asked:

Defending against multiple attackers requires exceptional skills. If you become the victim of an attack of multiple persons, prepare yourself to defend courageously. Self defense mechanisms are devised to preserve the life of victims during the attacks. Always try to follow the mechanism to get away from the violent attacks.

De-escalation is an important Self defense method that can use against multiple attackers. The major motto behind “de escalation” is “To escape” in any manner from the attacks. De escalation will become effective only if your mind is calm and aware about all possible dangers. Verbal “de escalation” is also important to cope with the multiple attackers in the case of starring, personal touching, evil teasing etc.

Lots of training schools are conducting various Self defense training programs. Prospective candidates may get good opportunities to learn various defensive mechanisms. Karate, Kun Fu, Kick boxing etc will help you to act suddenly to confront the multiple attackers. Martial arts boost up self confidence level and self esteem among the people. OSHA is conducting training on behavioral “de escalation” techniques to the people in order to manage violent attacks.

When you are confronted with a multiple attack, don’t allow opponents to surround you. The right position for a single fighter against the multiple attackers is to get all of them in to one line. So you can fight with every body at the same time. Before starting a rigorous fight you should try to analyze the strength of the opponents, in the entire situation it is advisable to hit the pressure and sensitive points of the attackers fast and run away from the place.

Pepper spray is a good Self defense product to protect oneself from the attacks. It is highly recommended in the case of multiple attackers. You can buy it from stores and no training is required for the use. Pepper spray will create a temporary blindness in the eyes of the attacker. You must try to escape from the scene on the very moment.

Back heel, scratching, Head butt, and Eye Gouge are some other techniques that can be used against the attackers wisely. Back heel helps you to hit the attacker by using your heels. You should give as much power while hitting the attackers. Scratching can be done by inserting your nails into the skin of the opponents and break it. Head **** can use in close fighting. You can use your fore head to keep fighting. In Eye Gouge, you can simply insert your fingers in to the eye socket. This will divert the attention of the attacker for some minute.

Personal alarms, mobile phones etc can also used as a self defensive tool. In any situation don’t try to be panic and react accordingly. Stay calm; be aware of the situation and acts accordingly.
