Ian Newton asked:

Women are well known for their powers of intuition, but sometimes this power seems to be turned off. So how can you reclaim this power and use it to protect yourself.

Intuition. Self belief and self power work hand in hand. In fact any skill we have is either validated or invalidated by our experiences in life.

An otherwise confident person can have their self assuredness reduced to rubble by accepting the opinions of others. Children are particularly vulnerable. They can be emotionally scarred by parents or siblings, by groups of hurtful children or teachers whose skills in personal development are lacking.

Your intuition is a gift, but if you are told you are stupid for having such feelings then soon you will push that skill into the background. It is this skill that is so important to help you make good life decisions yet so often it is neglected because another inner voice says don’t be ridiculous. It is high time you allowed your intuition to reassert itself, and for you to start to trust your own judgement again.

Trust is the issue.

Trust is eroded over time, school work families, all of these can build us up or pull us down. Different people will experience intuition in different ways, but the most common response is the classic “Gut Feeling”

My message to you is to trust your gut. When you get that creepy feeling in your stomach, pay attention. Like any human response, we have to learn to work with it. And in order to do so we need to test it and see the results for ourselves.

It is important to give recognition to your intuition when it is right. That guy who seemed too good to believe, you kicked yourself for rejecting his dinner offer, but later you find he can be violent when he drinks. Say thanks to your inner knowing.

The more you work with these feeling the more you frequently it will be right. It is very important not to override this feeling. If it doesn’t feel right to get into the car with these strangers don’t do it. If someone gives you directions and you feel uneasy, go another way. Trust and believe in your own feelings.

Sure you will be wrong on occasions, and it may cost you a fun date. But you have to look at the big picture. Your intuition only has to save you from one dangerous situation in your entire life for it to be valuable for you.

And its not just about violence. Not getting on the back of the motor cycle with a rider you’re not sure about, or even not taking a particular route home, or even knowing when you have had enough to eat. Learn to trust yourself and use this feeling to protect yourself.

David Gilbert asked:

I am an absolute martial arts enthusiast. Or specifically I practice the Tae Kwon Do Forms, Tae Kwon Do Sparring and Poomse as well.

Some people practicing Tae Kwon Do Forms might think: what’s the purpose of Tae Kwon Do training if you’re not allowed to use it in the streets?

Myth and Truth

In fact, it’s a myth. There is some style of Tae Kwon Do that focuses on self-defense aspect within the art. The reason many think that Tae Kwon Do Forms is useless on the street is because of the fact that the majority of what others see are the style of Tae Kwon Do that focus on mainly Olympic competition format.

Tae Kwon Do Forms is an exercise. Most Tae Kwon Do instructors don’t want and forbid you to use it because they know that it is useless and they don’t want you to know that. Plain and simple. My view, don’t have to agree. Like most all styles that are “traditional” use kata. You’ll know if it is real. First off a lot of contact when training, I am not saying fighting, but contact. You’ll hurt and get scratches and a little black and blue. If your not, then your in an exercise class, not a class for self defense, at least not an effective and real one.

Self-Defense Guidelines

You can use Tae Kwon Do or any other style of martial arts on the street to defend yourself. And please follow these simple guidelines:

1, It must be to defend only. The law does allow martial artist to defend ourselves. But we aren’t supposed to kill the people that have attacked us with his fist.

2, We are supposed to use some type of restraint. I am not supposed to break 10 bones even though that is what we are trained to do.

3, The defense has to be on the same level as the offense. If a guy attacks with a knife and I disarm him and he is no longer a threat I am supposed to stop fighting. In other words if I take him down and he is now unable to continue to attack I can’t continue to hurt him because I am upset.

4, There are some gray areas regarding the law. It is best that once you have taken the guy down and he isn’t an immediate threat you should leave the area as soon as possible. You don’t have to break every bone in his body are put him in a comma before you stop retaliating.

5, Use the self defense that you have been taught. Don’t go overboard. If you do go overboard you will go to jail. That doesn’t matter if you know martial arts or not. Going to jail is not worth it if you can get yourself out of the situation. If my life or family life is threatened I will respond with the same force. That means I will take a life. I have no choice and the law is supposed to protect me in that situation.

6, You should probably find someone who has been doing karate or kung fu around the same time as you and see if you can at least give him a good fight. If you can’t and the guy totally beats you up then you should consider getting out of that Tae Kwon Do class.

In Summary

At the end of the day, in a life and death situation a swift kick to the shenanigans would be a better form of defense than showing off what you learned at your Tae Kwon Do Form class.

Jessie Penn asked:

In todays society, adults need to know self defense tactics. But, what about your kids? A threatening situation could be around the next corner. Would your child know what to do, and could he/she defend themselves?

The kids of today deal with many things that we never even thought about. Within the last 30 years, countless dangers, along with wonderful technologies, have surfaced. Things like, computers, digital cameras, global positioning system (GPS), flash drives, and cell phones. There are too many educational and life enhancing products to mention. But, along with the marvelous inventions came predators, scams, identity theft, abuse, and many more dastardly deeds.

Today, kids are far more advanced than their grandparents. They deal with social peer expectations, media hype concerning beauty, fashion, and wealth. Drugs and alcohol is everywhere, television, magazines, and schools.

So, planning for and avoiding possible threatening situations must be taught to your kids. Teach your kids how to defend themselves if a sexual predator or abusive situation should arise or threaten their safety. Children are naturally friendly and trusting. The are willing to help when asked. Identify places that kids are most vulnerable to attack, like school playgrounds, public parks, biking or walking alone, and computer chat rooms.

Many families discuss and plan escape routes in the event of a fire in their home. So, why not discuss self defense with your kids? Family discussions and planning about self defense, might help your child avoid or escape from a disastrous situation. Identify safe havens in your home and neighborhood. Make sure your kids understand that their safety is the primary goal. Teach them never to be afraid to tell an adult if someone tries or actually does abuse them sexually or physically.

Many people think of self defense as a kick to the groin, or an elbow jab to the throat. But, we’re talking about kids, and it’s very doubtful that a small child could accomplish any of those types of defense.

Kids must be taught that self defense is doing everything possible to avoid or get away from an attacker. Self defense is about using your smarts; not your fists.

Teach your kids about limitations. Don’t force feed them some diluted information just because they’re kids. Children learn and respond to teaching when you show them you have confidence in their intelligence.

Help kids to learn to observe people and their activities. Teach them to be aware of their surroundings and to notice people watching them.

Teach them to run away and get help if they’re in a threating situation. If they cannot escape, teach your kids about vulnerable parts of our bodies. Teach kids to use the hard parts of their body for self defense and escape. For instance, poking eyes, bending and twisting fingers, scratching the face, kicking groin, elbowing throat or neck areas, and using their heel to kick in the groin area. Tell them to scream loudly, while kicking or wiggling to get away from their attacker.

But, you must teach your kids to understand that this type of activity is only acceptable if someone should try to abduct or hurt them physically. They must know that self defense is to be used only when their safety is in danger. These activities must never be used when throwing a temper tantrum or just because they are angry or upset because they did not get their way about something!

Predators do not want to draw attention to themselves, and might decide this kid is not worth their efforts.

Buzz Campion asked:

Every Morning You Wake Up, Life Stares You Smack in the Face. And it Say’s TODAY – You Gonna Live or You Gonna Die? The question is who survives on the street and who does not?

It’s Not the Fastest,

Not the Smartest,

Not the Strongest.

The species that survives is the most able to ADAPT!

What that means is – as a martial artist you going to do the same things you’ve been doing in the dojo but don’t work on today’s mean streets? Or are you going to ADAPT and change? Or are you going to die or get seriously injured the first time you try to use one of the watered down sports techniques you’ve learned in the controlled atmosphere of the dojo.

Look we now, live in the 21st century not the feudal times of ancient Japan or China. Don’t get me wrong, I firmly believe that traditional martial arts has a lot to offer all those who take up the challenge. After all, I have trained in those same arts for many years so I know what works and what does not.

But, I will be the first to admit that a lot of the techniques you’ll learn will not work in a street altercation.Even worse, should you try to use some of them in such a situation (especially some disarming techniques) get it wrong and you will die. It’s as simple as that. Why do I say die? Well I don’t want to shock you or be overly dramatic but here’s why? You see, if you don’t adapt to the changing types of violence that is happening on our streets as we speak, then you are one step closer to Non-Survival on the street.

Remember, complicated techniques don’t work they never have. So keep it simple and win.

YOU ADAPT! Or you DON’T survive. So what’s it going to be? You going to change? You going ADAPT? OR are you going to Die? It’s your responsibility to learn how to protect yourself in any way you can. Now you know all the facts, are you going to ‘ADAPT’ or You going to?

It’s up to you.

Peter Garant asked:

Even a peace-loving, non-violent person can get lots of fun and valuable experience and insight with a course on tactical training. With peace keepers, it is a must. Here are some ways a class on tactical training can benefit people.

Awareness

A class on this topic doesn’t always mean a confrontational remedy to trouble. Lots of times it results to preventive rather than trouble-shooting measures. The main thing to benefit from tactical training is awareness. Trouble-makers, either in the field of war or criminality, have become more sophisticated today than in other times due to easier access to lethal and modern weapons and systems, primarily through the Internet. It’s easier to locate where these stuff are available. Being aware of what trouble-makers are doing and using today through courses on tactical training, people can better position themselves for safety prior, during, or even after trouble strikes.

Hand-to-Hand Combat

Tactical training deals with armed and unarmed confrontations, among other many things. With unarmed training, trainees cannot be expected to be martial arts gurus after 2 to 6 months of tactical training, but at least they learn practical things to do when in trouble in the streets. Striking vital points in the body, arm locks and holds, and basic and quick blocks and counters are important. The idea here is how to get out of a tight situation fast and then run.

Home or Environmental Defense

Tactical training is not just for war. It is also for securing one’s home and properties. With tactical training people can easily pinpoint the weaknesses and strengths of their houses or offices, inside and out. In case of deadly intrusion into their homes they can quickly react with calm to secure the safety of their love ones and then proceed to deal with the intruders in the safest way possible. The key here is fast, precise, and strategic action before intruders can figure out the house plan and know their way around. And this is systematically learned in tactical training courses.

Precision Sniper Training

No, the course does not aim to make all trainees as snipers deployable in jungles to shoot at advancing enemy personnel, but this may be possible with some learners. Anyway, the main idea is to gain precision shooting with hand guns and rifles. As a sport, precision shooting develops mental calmness, discipline, patience, steady hands, controlled breathing, and resolve to finalize a decision pronto. In real-life shooting, it ensures accurate shooting to merely disable armed attackers and not hit them – or bystanders – lethally.

Bodyguard Training

Also called Executive Protection Training, bodyguard training is not just for protecting bosses or a dignitary and securing their immediate surroundings. Trainees may apply the skill to protect their own love ones in crowded places where robbery, snatching, holdups, or random killing is rampant. The insights on street psychology, or psychology of an attacker or killer, are quite beneficial for anybody who values life and safety. Preventive measures on security, among other lessons on bodyguard training, are indispensable even for people living simple lives, in cities or the countryside.

These are just examples of the exciting and beneficial courses tactical training can offer people.
