Steve Thibeault asked:

The topic of self defense is being talked about a lot these days. And there is no doubt about the reason why this is happening. With increasing crime levels, people are becoming aware of the fact that if they are confronted with an attacker, they need to know what to do.

While self defense products like pepper sprays, stun guns and tasers are extremely easy to use and convenient, you cannot carry them with you all the time. For example, if you are wearing an elegant gown and going for a party, there is a small chance that you would like to carry a pepper spray with you. Though pepper sprays and stun guns also come in small packages and can be disguised as lipsticks or key chains, they may not be your first choice in such situations.

It is obviously advisable to arm yourself with other knowledge and skills so that you can use other self defense tactics if need be. Undergoing some kind of self defense training is especially important for those who may have jobs or professions that put them at a higher risk of attack. Security guards, waitresses and bartenders need to be more careful while they are at work and while getting off work too. With this knowledge in mind, there are various companies that have started marketing videos on self defense techniques. Some of these videos claim to tech martial arts and judo. On the other hand some of them claim to comprehensively train you in various self defense tactics that you can use when attacked.

Irrespective of how authentic these self defense videos may be, there is one thing that almost all fail to mention – the fact that active and concerted practice is required to master the art of self defense techniques. Learning self defense is not as easy as sitting on the couch and watching a self defense video once a day for five days at a stretch. For that matter, it is not even standing in front of the idiot box and practicing some moves once in a while. If you really want to learn how to defend yourself in the time of need, you need to see the video’s, and involve a friend and practice the moves regularly till you become confident and adept. You could use kickboxing equipment to practice too.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that the story ends there. There is another aspect of self defense that is not very well known. Irrespective of how many times you may have practices your moves and self defense tactics, you may react in a completely different manner when you are actually confronted by a real assailant, kidnapper or ******. Many people who consider themselves otherwise prepared for an attack freeze at the sight of someone with a knife.

One is not suggesting that you throw yourself in front of real attack situation for practice. However, thinking about the situation actively can help you prepare for it mentally. Think of what you would do when something like this happens, the moves you would make and the manner in which you will go about using your strengths. Learn about the weak spots that you can hit upon so that you can emerge victorious with the least effort required.
Following the above mentioned recommendations in conjunction with the self defense training videos can definitely help you in protecting yourself better.

Imran Al asked:

Unarmed self defense is a very important technique which can work any time and also give you self confidence to face an attack and counter it. There are many self defense products available; however you do not always have the ‘good-luck’ of being able to access them in time of need. Unarmed self defense can allow you to counter an attack at any time you just have to know what the weapons of your won body are. You might be attacked by an individual or by a group, the first thing to remember is never give up no matter how tough the attackers seem. Put up a good fight you never know what might turn in your favor. The second thing to remember is that it’s not a win-loose game. The win in self- defense is when you have been able to escape the attack. You do not have to stay and attempt to floor the attacker. In case you are attacked by more than one person the idea is to keep moving and find a break through which allows you to run for life.

Hand Techniques: Hands can be very effective in attacking the opponent. For unarmed defense the open hand strikes are considered far more damaging then punching. Punching is natural reaction towards an attack but it might take months for a normal perform to master the art of making good solid punch. Blows from the heel of the hand can be very forceful and hurting. Solar plexus, lower abdomen and ********* all make very good targets for this kind of punching. The karate type spear hand strike is also very effective. You just have to straighten your hand and press the fingers strongly together. This can produce very sharp and powerful strikes. Throat, eyes and the solar plexus are good targets for the spear hand. Our elbows are also a very tough part and can be jammed into the attackers ribs and also make him loosen his grips allowing you to make a hasty exit. Make sure you do not end up striking his forehead or back of the head with your punches as there are the hardest parts of the body and you will cause more harm to yourself than him.

Leg Techniques: Kicks are knee strikes are also very helpful for unarmed defense. However mastering the art of a perfect kick can take some amount of practice and guidance. When you kick, make sure that you do not go high and mighty with them, higher the kick lesser will be its impact for a person without much knowledge of martial arts. Kicking the groin and knees of the assailant at an angle will hurt him enough to loosen his grip and allow you to escape. Knee strikes are also very effective and are relatively easy to master. They are extremely helpful for close range attacks and can cause a lot of damage to the attacker.

Pete Kauffer asked:

When traveling in your car there are a number of things to keep in mind to avoid a self defense situation. Probably the easiest thing to do is be aware of where you are. Avoid areas that may not look like you should be there. Abandoned residential or commercial areas or areas with massive graffiti are probably areas to avoid. If you find yourself in an area like this, quickly turn around and backtrack to a better area.

Be aware of who is in the vehicles around you. Especially in slow traffic or on city streets. Most car jackings are not performed on the freeway. They are performed on city streets where the assailant is able to either get out of another car or appear from the sidewalk area or come out of a building. Keeping your car doors locked while driving will help to avoid a car jacking. But if you observe someone in another vehicle who could be a possible threat, get out of the immediate area by slowing down, speeding up or turning down another street.

Also related, be aware of someone continuing to follow you to your destination. Most home invasion robberies are perpetrated by the assailant following someone home and getting into the garage before the garage door is closed and secured. If you feel you are being followed drive to the nearest law enforcement office, fire station or public area. Make sure to stay in your vehicle until the vehicle following you is out of sight.

While we cannot live in paranoia, being observant can increase your safety and the safety of others. Try it the next time you are driving in your vehicle and see what you can learn. Being aware of your surroundings is the first line of self defense. The quicker you can recognize a bad situation the faster you can react to protect yourself.

Matthew Carey asked:

Before you go out and purchase a self defense product it is important to understand that they are completely useless until you know how to use them properly. If you do not educate yourself about proper use there is the possibility that you will find yourself in more trouble than when you started. How does this make sense? For example if a person is carrying a gun but is not educated in using it, it is very possible it could be used against them by a criminal. This is what I like to call a false sense of security and is common place when someone purchases a weapon or a self defense product without learning proper use.

If you are in the market to purchase a self defense product it is direly important to educate yourself about proper use. The education could mean the difference between walking away from your assailant or being seriously injured by the attacker. It is extremely important to know that the self defense product itself doesn’t make you any stronger or smarter. They are designed to give you the advantage in situations where you are in danger.

Unfortunately many people that purchase self defense items fall into a mindset that I like to refer to as “Superman Syndrome” . This is where an individual feels they are almost invincible because of the self defense product they carry on them. This mindset is EXTREMELY dangerous because most people tend to either provoke a situation or throw their caution to the wind which will almost always result in that person being injured.

Before you make the commitment to buying any self defense product it is very important to do your research and become familiar with your desired product.
For example, if you choose to purchase pepper spray you should make sure you can answer the following questions:

* At what distance is this particular pepper spray effective.

* Is the pepper spray legal in my state?

* Where is the best place to aim your pepper spray?

* How long am I supposed to spray it for?

* Will the pepper spray be accessible when I need it?

* What should I do after I spray the attacker?

These questions may seem very simple but simple as they may be they are detrimental to your well being if you are using a self defense product. The example I gave you is for pepper spray but you can use pretty much the same questions for most other self defense products. The world we live in is not always the safest place and the criminals out there are getting smarter and smarter and chances are they have some experience dealing with victims that use self defense products. That is why it is extremely important to make sure you are more educated than the person attacking you. There internet is full of wonderful resources on using self defense products so before you make the commitment go ahead and do some homework and make sure you are well educated about the product you choose.

self defense

Chris W. Roberts asked:

Most people will never take a self defense course in their life. They will spend money on homes, vacations, cars, toys, etc but not on their own personal safety. Why?

1) Most people have the attitude of “they will never be attacked so what’s the point?”. I usually respond by saying that people who are attacked didn’t expect it either. Maybe they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. While you can control to some degree whether you might become a victim, you can’t always.

2) It costs too much to take lessons. I love this one. You can take self defense lessons for far less than you might spend on coffees for a year. It amazes me how we will spend thousands of dollars to lose weight and get in shape which are very important, but neither of those matter if we aren’t physically safe.

3) Many people also feel when they take a self defense course, that somehow they are accepting it might happen which they can’t ever imagine. Its like, if you don’t think of self defense, you will never need it.

4) Look at the size of me! What is the point of taking self defense? I won’t be able to defend myself anyways. We are all born with whatever genetics we were given. I can’t imagine not doing everything possible to make sure I had the best chance to defend myself regardless of my size, age, abilities, etc.

First of all when looking for a reality based self defense instructor look for someone who you can relate to, who doesn’t intimidate or scare you, but rather has a teaching style you are comfortable with.

Pete Kauffer asked:

Keeping some simple items inside your vehicle and maintaining those items, is as important as maintaining the exterior of your vehicle. No doubt you have seen or read about others traveling in a vehicle and becoming stranded, through no fault of their own, and being seriously injured or killed due to the lack of a few basic necessities. Just a few simple changes and a few simple items in your vehicle could save your life or keep you from serious injury.

One of the most important items to have in your vehicle is a flashlight. If you have a flashlight that uses batteries, test it from time to time and replace the batteries at least once a year. There are new types of flashlights that do not require batteries and last for years. All you do is shake them back and forth a number of times and they create their own electricity. Think of giving a flashlight as a gift. You could save someone’s life.

Another very important item to keep in your vehicle is water. If you break down on a hot summer day, thirst comes quickly. Even in the winter time, if you break down, or need to install snow chains, or need to stay with the vehicle or travel on foot for any length of time, you will need to have some water. Keep a few bottles in the trunk or under the seats. Do not forget to keep some extra for traveling companions and especially children and pets.

Keep a little food in your vehicle. Something that will keep for a number of months and not spoil or rot. Granola bars or crackers with a long shelf life will provide a little energy if you are stranded for a period of time. Remember to check the food items from time to time and replace or add to if necessary. Keeping a little something to eat in your vehicle can even be used if you are stuck in traffic for a period of time on your way to work.

In colder climates or in the winter, extra clothing should be kept in your vehicle. Instead of regifting a jacket or sweater you received, put it in your vehicle. Someday you might thank the person that gave you that “crazy” gift. There are safety blankets and rain gear, used by hikers and campers, available at most sporting goods stores. Most are vacuum packed and take up very little space and are typically very inexpensive. Get a few of each for others traveling with you.

It may seem like a lot of space taken up in your vehicle and a lot of expense to purchase the items mentioned. But you can be sure that those who have experienced some type of vehicle breakdown in a hostile environment and did not have a basic human life sustaining item wished they had taken a little time and incurred a little expense. You never know what may happen. But if you do a little preparation you could save yourself or others in the long run.

Philip P asked:

Strictly speaking, Krav Maga is not actually a martial art in the traditional sense.

Whereas martial arts like karate have spiritual and sporting elements, it has one real purpose: to save your life and neutralize your attacker as quickly as possible. There are no fancy spinning back-kicks that look great on television but will put you at risk in a real life fight, Krav Maga techniques are based on simple, instinctive movements that you will be able to carry out when you find yourself in the stressful situation of being physically attacked.

Also unlike in traditional martial arts, when you train in Krav Maga you spend your time learning how to defend realistic attacks and and how to counter attack and not on movements that are useless in the real world or on perfecting “forms” like the Kata in karate. Unfortunately, many martial art black belts have found that the skills they have spent years perfecting let them down when attacked by a common thug.

Techniques include strikes using the knees and elbows, kicks (usually to the groin or legs when standing), punches and even headbutts. It’s not pretty, but it is brutally effective and may just save your life.

Training in Krav Maga also helps you prepare for the mental aspect of defending yourself against attack. Not only do you train to defend against multiple attackers, you will learn how to defend yourself in a number of everyday situations: how to defend against attacks when seated for example. You will also learn how to defend against various weapons including knives and firearms, and when necessary how to improvise weapons from ordinary items around you such as a chair, for example.

There are no off-limit techniques in Krav Maga, if you are being attacked it is vital you use whatever force necessary to defend your life, or that of your loved ones. However you will also learn how to avoid potentially dangerous situations and how to de-escalate a confrontation, only resorting to a physical level when it is clear your well being is threatened.

Originally developed by Imrich Lichtenfeld for the Israeli military, it’s effectiveness in real life conflict has seen Krav Maga techniques adopted by agencies around the world who’s members find themselves in dangerous situations on a regular basis. However, it is also growing in popularity with the civilian population, and today men, women and children train in Krav Maga in the knowledge that they are learning an effective, proven form of self defense.
