Keep a cell phone on a charger near your bed while sleeping. In case of an emergency the phone will be fully charged and close enough to be used. With the new technologies today cellular phones are getting smaller in size. And lighter in weight. With the smaller and lighter phones come smaller and lighter batteries. The smaller a battery is the less charge it will hold.
If you are concerned about plugging the charger into a wall socket and having it live at all times plug the charger into a power strip with an on/off switch. This way you can turn on power to the charger only when you are going to bed. A power strip with a lighted switch is the best for this application. You can tell if the phone is being charged if the power strip power indicator is on.
There are new charging options available as well. There are charging mats that charge not only your cell phone but your digital audio devices, GPS units, and Bluetooth devices. Not all devices are compatible with the charging mats but if you have devices that can be charged with a mat it would be pretty simple to charge all your devices at the same time. Just put the charger on a nightstand beside your bed and charge them while you sleep.
Most cell phones today have lighted displays as well. In the event of an emergency you could use the lighted display as a flashlight to locate the large flashlight next to your bed. You do have a large flashlight next to your bed don’t you? Two large flashlights next to your bed would be an even better idea. Just make sure to check or replace the batteries on at least a yearly basis. A good rule of thumb is to replace them when you change clocks for daylight savings and standard time.
