Abhishek Agarwal asked:

You won’t regret winning, they say – it is something you can get quite accustomed to; so why would you not want to taste success with every aspect of your life if only you could? Well, you can now – if the psychic self-defense promoters are to be believed, for they promote a way of life that is determined by your aura – the air around you, or the impression you give about yourself – that is felt by others and only visible for a few and they go on to say it is this which reveals your true self and thereby, determines the course of your life. So, going by that reasoning, one can surmise that controlling and guiding your aura is also well within your reach, right?

Yes, it is indeed so and this psychic self-defense a.k.a. your aura is what comes to the fore when you are confronted by another with either negative or positive charges, which are revealed to your aura by vibes given by them; in the former instance it can be a feeling of fear, hatred or envy that are negatives while in the latter situation, it can be peace, happiness and sympathy that reinforces your feelings of worth. In the first instance, you may feel repelled by the person with the negative aura and want to stay away while it is only normal to want to stay with the more desirable, positive vibe-giving person of the second instance who will seem attractive to you.

However, all negative auras do not necessarily mean harm to you; at times, these can simply be strong and aggressive personalities that are at cross-purposes with your ideals and so you need to cleanse your ‘chakra’s or 24-points of energy in the body to accommodate, flush out the negative aspects of human and non-human, intangible nature and concentrate on building your resilience in facing these without being vulnerable to them.

They are not going to go away because you scream ‘boo’ and they are as much a part of the canvas of life as the positive, feel good feelings are, so you may as well accept the negatives and work to learn from them as much as you can; this change in perspective will reinforce your inner energies and personal aura to a stronger one that can withstand any amount of negative vibes and still reflect an inner calm with all the turmoil happening outside.

From the established self-healing techniques to strengthen your aura, such as meditation, eating a balanced diet, getting adequate sleep, to practicing intuition and daily spending some alone time to draw guidance from a subconscious level, there are many ways in which we can build our psychic self defense to protect us from negative vibes and people.

It is all about learning about your true identity, letting your intuition guide you and listening to the voice of the heart that can be achieved through self-discipline and journaling thoughts, directing and minding them to serve as a guide to happiness, contentment and peace. So, harness the positive thoughts and free the negatives and you will find everything your heart looks for – within you.

Chris Pizzo asked:

Although we rarely recognize it, mythology continues to be strong part of our culture. Folklore has evolved significantly, as America’s legendary heroes have been frontier trappers,
cowboys, policemen, soldiers, masked men, caped
superheroes and science fiction men-of-action
such as Buck Rodgers, Flash Gordon, Han Solo, and
of course…Captain Kirk of the Starship
Enterprise.

Replacing Indians (the Native American kind), “commies”, and ***** with Aliens as the bad-guys, and foreign lands as undiscovered planets, from September 8, 1966 – September 2, 1969, Bill Shatner kicked extraterrestrial *** for 79 episodes using World War II Judo and Jujutsu.

Amazingly, with all the far-out and high-tech
phasers, photons, and other assorted high tech
junk they could have used to save the day, Kirk
and his boys often reverted back to the
hand-to-hand combat moves they must have learned
from their great-great-great-great-great-grandfathers.
(That, or in the future the military actually
bought a clue and decided to start teaching what
actually works again!)

Now, whether you’re a pointy-ear-wearin’
“Trekkie” or not, definitely check out an episode
or two next time your surfin’ by the Sci-Fi
channel.

You’ll notice that the aliens that the crew
encountered were often physically dominating and
at times much larger and stronger, therefore
calling for a smarter and more effective approach
to combat than the wildly thrown “haymaker”
punch.

While actual terms like close-combat, martial
arts, Jujutsu or Judo were left out of the
script, the knowledgeable observer will
immediately recognize where the devastating edge
of hand strikes, brutal kicks, and ferocious
throws come from. In the famous episode “Arena”, Captain Kirk has
to fight the reptilian commander of an enemy
vessel in one-on-one combat. Kirk attacks the
alien with a flurry of blows including all those
found in the WWII military combative systems we
teach.

In “Day of the Dove”, Kirk and the rest of his
crew are pitted against Klingon warriors in
close-combat as both sides are restricted to only
their own respective warrior codes for guidance.

My own personal favorite, “Bread and Circuses”,
Kirk, Spock, and McCoy use fists, swords, and
anything and everything else they can get their
hands on to battle technologically advanced
Romans.

Although there is no real Vulcan neck pinch, Gene
Roddenberry and the others who helped to create
Star Trek were products of a generation that knew
how to fight. In fact, Roddenberry himself had
law enforcement experience and piloted a B-17 in
the Pacific during WWII.

During this time, the United States military
practiced hand-to-hand combat training based off
of what was taught by W.E. Fairbairn and other
pioneers of REAL close-combat. After the war,
many military veterans became Hollywood stunt men
and when fight sequences were setup, did what
came natural to win a fight…Their training from
actual combat.

While many fight sequences of the 60′s were still
choreographed in the classic style of the Western
barroom brawl, only Star Trek utilized these
authentic, proven combat methods in the majority
of its scenes.

As time marched on, and the world became
“sissified”, martial arts shown in TV shows and
films changed dramatically in order to appear
more impressive to the audience. After all,
nobody likes to see the hero drop his opponent in
only a few “ugly” moves (Except for maybe Austin
Power’s recent “Judo Chop”…Edge of hand anyone?).

No, they want high-flyin’ wirework, drunken
monkey foolishness, and ridiculous
split-the-crotch-of-my-pants high kicks.

But given a real, drag out, no-holds-barred,
fight for your life, I’d put my money on Kirk and
his “Crew” as opposed to Neo, Morpheus and the
rest of those Matrix computer geeks any day of
the week. (And Kirk would have beat the snot out
of that flashlight-wielding sissy Vader too)

Joseph Pressley asked:

When we are faced in a life threatening situation, our first initial reaction will be shock. Of course, we will be in terrible shock because things are so unexpected and that we were not prepared for such incident to occur. After the shock, here comes fear and being in a panic state. Fear that the assailants might kill us in an instant or perhaps torture us painfully and panic because we are already cramming to escape from the situation and wishing that we are going to be rescued as soon as possible.

Those are just normal reactions once you are in deep crisis however, if you want to save yourself from the situation you are in, you need to try relaxing and remaining calm even though you are faced in great danger. Why is this so important? Because being calm and relaxed will enable you to think and use your mind as to how you can use your self defense skills or perhaps with the resources around you such as self defense weapons, car keys, or anything that you can utilize for your great escape.

It is known that the mind is the best self defense there is. This is not an easy task to take since we will all be covered up with fear once we are involved in crimes. Controlling the emotions and thinking of solutions can be achieved if a certain individual learns how to use his concrete thinking. You will later realize how important it is to be in a relaxed state and as mentioned, it will allow you to use the self defense techniques you have learned.

With the help of self defense schools and trainings, an individual enables himself to learn and develop different forms of tactics and techniques on how to defend the self during sudden attack. The world of Martial Arts is constantly growing and up to this point, more and more types of martial arts is being developed and taught to different self defense schools. This is very beneficial to almost any individual who wishes to provide their children and their loved ones with protection that they can carry for a lifetime.

The use of self defense weapons like stun gun, tazer and pepper spray are also very easy to learn. They are handy, convenient and come in different designs. The only disadvantage with this is not all states are allowed to use any of the above mentioned self defense weapons. For men especially the old adults, they can use their canes or perhaps their home keys and coins. They are good and can really be trusted in stressful situations you know.

As a conclusion, the use of self defense techniques or weapons and other alternatives will all be useless if the individual does not concentrate and focus. Putting the self defense skills into action is possible if the individual will learn how to manage and overcome his fear. And lastly, things can easily be handled well if you learn to control your emotions and increase your self confidence.

Alain Burrese asked:

The recent shooting of a criminal attempting to rob his store by fifty-seven year old pharmacist Jerome Ersland in Oklahoma City raises the question of what is justified in defending oneself, and what crosses the line. It also provides a good introduction to this article and an excellent example in the legal chapter of a book I’m working on. Ersland has been charged with first-degree murder for killing 16-year-old Antwun Parker, one of two criminals that entered Ersland’s store. Parker’s partner brandished a handgun before Ersland fired upon the two in self-defense with his own firearm. However, after hitting Parker in the head, rendering him unconscious on the floor, and chasing the armed criminal out to the street, Ersland returned, obtained another firearm, and returned to Parker, still laying on the floor, and fired five shots into Parkers abdomen, shots that the medical examiner states killed Parker.

Without getting into too much legalese for this short article, I want to address the very basics in that to legally defend yourself using physical force against another person, there must be three factors present.

1. means
2. opportunity
3. intent

At the beginning, it appears all three were present. The criminals interred the store brandishing a weapon. The one had a firearm so he had the means (tools or skills readily accessible to commit the crime). They had opportunity (the conditions immediately favorable to commit the crime) because they were right there in the store ready to rob it. From a reasonable standpoint, it sure looked on video tape they had intent (mental state at the time of the crime). Why else would you bust into a store waving a firearm (and I don’t know what they demanded) if not for the intent of committing a crime?

From everything I saw on the surveillance video, it sure appeared that Ersland was justified in defending himself when the criminals burst into his store waving a firearm and demanding whatever they were demanding. Even District Attorney David Prater said Ersland was justified in shooting Parker once in the head.

However, Prater stated that the teenager was unconscious, unarmed, lying on his back and posing no threat when Ersland fired what the medical examiner said were the fatal shots.

In general, a person is only justified to use deadly force to stop the threat, and the threat must be one that is likely to cause death or serious bodily injury. The force you use must be reasonable, which means the level of force that a reasonable person would use in a similar situation. That the big question. What would a reasonable person do in the same situation?

I think it is reasonable to use deadly force, Ersland’s firearm, when criminals burst into his store with firearms of their own. However, going back and shooting Parker when he was no longer a threat goes beyond the general rule of being allowed to use deadly force to stop the threat. This is why Ersland is being charged with murder, and this is where the legal system will have to determine based on all of the evidence and circumstances if what Ersland did was reasonable. If no plea bargain is entered into, a jury of Ersland’s peers will determine the outcome of this tragic event.

I say tragic because I believe it is always tragic when people are robbed and people are killed. This incident affects many more than Parker and Ersland. I stand 100% behind people’s right to defend themselves, that’s why I teach hapkido and self-defense classes including firearm use. But we must also know the law and ensure what we do stays within those parameters set by our society. I want people to avoid criminal charges should they ever need to use empty hand or weapon skills to defend themselves or others.

If you practice self-defense or own a weapon to defend yourself or loved ones, and I believe everyone should do so because defending yourself is your responsibility because you are the only one that is going to be there in the dire time of need, then you must also familiarize yourself with the laws regarding justifiable use of force. You must know when you are justified and what use of force is allowable for different situations. By learning these beforehand, and incorporating them into your self-defense scenario based training, you will be better prepared to defend yourself from the bad guys and not have to defend yourself against criminal prosecution for crossing the line in self-defense.

Steve Chi asked:

When looking for a Krav Maga (KM) instructor, who should you listen to? Moni Azik with Commando Krav Maga or David Kahn with Israeli Krav Maga? Or should you follow the Alain Cohen or Darren Levine style of Krav Maga?

Each one is a master in this field, but each one has a different method of instruction. Let’s take a closer look at the top instructors so that you can decide which one is right for you.

1.) Moni Azik with Commando KM is certainly one of the most famous experts. He has a very polished web site and has been featured on the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, Fox News, and a whole host of nationally syndicated magazines.

Commando Krav Maga (CKM) is unique in that it provides training through traveling classes in most major American cities as well as Canada and European venues. These bootcamps are for certified instructors as well as the general public. You can even schedule some private lessons with Moni Azik the day before or after one of his CKM Boot Camps.

2.) Another expert and instructor is David Kahn with Israeli KM, a school in New Jersey. David Kahn trained under Grandmaster Haim Gidon, who is the highest ranked KM black belt ever promoted by founder Imi Lichtenfeld. It has been said that “David is quite possibly the most connected with honest to goodness Israeli special ops guys of anyone in North America.”

David Kahn has written one of the essential books for the for the method called Krav Maga: An Essential Guide to the Renowned Method – For Fitness and Self-Defense.

3.) There’s also Alain Cohen, who heads the KM Federation. His specialty is security and close protection. He is a security consultant for large firms and has written several books including Israeli Defense System Krav Maga.

Alain Cohen also has a DVD course and a seminar that travels around the United States.

4.) Darren Levine is probably the most well-known instructor in the United States and has a center in Los Angeles, California. He has one of the largest studios in the world called KM Worldwide Training Center. He also has the largest reality based self-defense organization in the world with over 240 licensed schools and claims to have trained over 500 law enforcement and government agencies.

Darren Levine is a prosecutor for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and was awarded a Founder’s Diploma by Imi Lichtenfeld for Special Excellence in KM. Imi awarded this diploma to only 2 individuals in the world: Darren Levine and Eyal Yanilov. These diplomas were given to the people that Imi wanted to be the future leaders in the field.

5.) Eyal Yanilov with the International KM Federation is another Master and holds the unique “Founder’s Diploma of Excellence,” which was given to only one other instructor, Darren Levine.

Offering one of the first classes for American citizens, Eyal Yanilov has been teaching instructors’ courses around the world, under the auspices of the Israeli Ministry of Education and the International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF). Eyal Yanilov is the key force in spreading the method throughout the world.

Hopefully, you can now identify the major players in the Israeli self-defense method. Each expert has his own personal style of instruction, and each instructor appeals to a different demographic.

Whoever you choose to follow, realize that Krav Maga is a “no holds barred” method of real-world self defense on the street.
