Judy Ringer asked:

“Ouch! That was my arm you just hit with your unconscious, wild swimming!” I looked up at the lifeguard, who gave me a slow head shake and wry smile. I smiled back. My lane partner swam on oblivious. Later, standing at one end of the pool waiting for him to pass me, I couldn’t seem to move far enough into the corner. He almost hit me again as he somersaulted into his turn. It was as if I wasn’t there. I was definitely not on his radar screen.

I kept on swimming, but with more awareness. My thoughts:

What a lane hog! Doesn’t he know I’m swimming here? I was in this lane first; I even greeted him when he got in. He must realize I’m here. His unconsciousness is fascinating. Amazing.

As I continued swimming and musing, my attitude gradually moved from anger to reflection and curiosity. I thought, this isn’t so different from life.

There are characters in my life anyway who seem to think nothing of taking up lots of space. They don’t worry when they speak whether their words might hurt. They weave in and out of traffic, seemingly oblivious to other vehicles nearby. All of life seems to be there just for them; this is their lane, regardless of who else might be swimming, working, or living alongside them.

So, what should we do with these people? What I did that morning at the pool was to increase my own awareness. Self-Defense begins with me. If I know that this “partner” is oblivious of my feelings, my presence, my being, I first must keep myself from being hurt. In the lane, I was visually and physically vigilant. In life, I center myself and increase my awareness of the other person and their possible actions.

As I center myself, I am able to jump into Discovery. I can be curious and amused and interested, instead of judgmental, angry and victimized. This mind shift is the best form of inner self defense and is very powerful.

I may choose to speak to my partner. In this case, I was almost ready to get out of the pool. Centering, discovery, and the lifeguard’s smile were enough. But, in life, I would probably have a conversation with my friend, my coworker, my life partner. I would let them know how their unconscious behavior is impacting me, and I’d invite them into dialogue.

The point is to know that we have choices. Start with inner self-defense: center, smile, and jump into Discovery. Then you’ll know what to do next.

Jeffrey Miller asked:

One of the most commonly known, and yet misunderstood set of techniques within modern Ninja training is known as the Kihon Happo. These basic techniques are introduced to new students who are looking to learn ninjutsu, very early in their training.

This article will give you a deeper understanding of this so-called set of “basic” techniques, and allow you to see through the forms to the true lessons waiting for you. But, to begin your understanding, you must first know what I’m talking about.

The concept of the Kihon Happo is said to have originated in the Gyokko-Ryu (“Jewel (or Jade) Tiger School”), one of the 9 historical combat lineages that make up the Bujinkan Dojo of current generation grandmaster, Masaaki Hatsumi. However, what is collectively known as the kihon happo is really a combining of 2 important sets of techniques which teach:

1) The effective use of the Ninja’s kamae (body-mind-spirit postures) for controlling an attack, and…

2) Effective use of body dynamics and strategies for escaping from grabbing attacks

Together, both sets convey the foundational techniques and skills that will show up again and again, regardless of the technique or kata being used in future training.

And this leads to knowing just what these “secrets”, strategies, and “basics” are, that a student is supposed to be learning.

One of the questions that I ask my intermediate and advanced students who have learned these models is:

“What are these techniques teaching us?”

And, while it is very easy to just describe the step-by-step actions being performed – there is so much more that you cannot see if you’re only looking at the form of the technique. Because, if you’re only focusing on say, Ichimonji no kata, from the perspective of…

Step 1 – Receive his punch
Step 2 – Strike his neck (etc.) with an omote-shuto (palm-up sword-hand fist)

Then you are either a brand new beginner to the art, and this is exactly what you should be focusing on. Or…

You are still stuck in “beginner mindset” – what I call “white belt thinking” – and missing the point of the models.

The real power hidden within the models of the kihon happo is not in “what” you are doing, but in:

WHY you are doing it

WHEN you are doing it

WHERE you are positioning your body, limbs, and targets relative to your opponent, and…

HOW you are delivering your strikes

The kihon happo is said to be about “creation.” But, unless you know what you’re “creating,” it doesn’t help much to know that. And, while I talk about this concept in other articles, and it’s covered quite extensively in my Advanced Sanshin & Kihon Happo Home Study Course, the thing to know about this concept is that it transcends the physical aspects of the technique models themselves.

It has to!

Because the point of kihon happo training is to create variation after variation of each technique – 8 variations, and then eight variations of each variation, and then 8 of each of these, into infinity – until the base models become just variations among variations.

And yet, through all of this, the concepts and principles – the very foundation of the kata models and the invisible lessons that you need to learn to see – never change!

Chris Pizzo asked:

I feel lucky that I am involved with martial arts and self defense training. Rather then just protecting people I teach people how to protect themselves, and I know all my instructors feel the same way.

Martial arts instructors used to be respected in society, but misinformation, McDojos, and incompetent frauds have turned people away. I see it as part of my mission to teach the truth about martial arts. Self defense is like any other consumer product, and the public needs to be informed.

I enjoy combative sports like boxing, karate, and of course judo, because they’re a lot of fun, and good for combat conditioning, but at the end of the day they’re just sports. People don’t know the difference between combat sports and self defense, and that can get them killed. In a street fight there are no rules and it is a matter of life and death. Techniques and strikes that would get you penalized in a competition are exactly what you need to do in a self defense situation.

Do you remember that kid growing up who said he knew karate and couldn’t fight worth a damn? The same holds true today when it comes to most martial arts “experts”. Most martial arts instructors have never been in a real fight, and deep down they know what they are teaching is useless outside of their martial arts school. They should be proud of their students for doing well in sport, but instead they tell them whatever they want to hear. I have instructors who teach martial arts like Tae Kwon Do, but they teach military hand-to-hand combat and self defense techniques separately.

Another thing a lot of these so-called masters say is that they either taught military personnel or they served themselves. They know you won’t check out their claims, and probably even believe the lies. If the Navy had as many SEALS as there are guys claiming to be SEALS, they would have divisions not teams. Also, even if someone served in the military, it doesn’t make their sport combative system any more deadly.

There isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t hear from someone in law enforcement, the military or just an average citizen who takes time out to say thanks. They made time to train and learn real world self defense and combat martial arts, and they made it home safe. It would be great if one day one of my students goes to the Olympics, but it is even more gratifying to know that my students are safe because of what they learned.

The truth is few people teach real self defense methods that can work anywhere, even if the odds are stacked against you. I make it clear to my students, what the differences are between civilized sport combat, and savage street fighting so they know what really works for self defense. Too many martial arts instructors don’t know the truth, and their students are the ones who pay the consequences.

Brian Garvin asked:

The other name for a Combat Sport is a Combative Sport. This is also known as a Competitive Contact Sport where two people take each other on implementing specific Rules Of Engagement. The main goal of Combat Sports is to the extent possible simulate a real fighting scenario. There are at least 35 styles of combat sports that are known and talked about, blogged and published in some form of media regularly.

Hand to Hand Combat

This is just one style of Combat Sports. People commonly use the acronym HTH or H2H to describe this. This is basically one on one fighting without the use of a weapon and generally refers to the military. Hand to Hand Combat is often taught at Boot Camp, and more advanced HTH is taught by either High Ranking Martial Arts Instructors, usually Black Belts with several stripes (3rd, 4th degree etc..) to Special Forces and Special Operations Units within all branches of the Armed Forces.

There are 3 types of physical contact that typically occur in Close Combat Sports.

1.) Striking – This is an attack on another person using either a weapon or a specific body part. I’m referring to body parts such as the fists, elbows, knees, head like in a head butt, legs and feet. There are many ways to strike an opponent with either your body or any specific weapon. Fencing is an example of using a weapon for striking.

2.) Grappling – These are specific maneuvers used to gain a physical advantage over your opponent. Jiu Jitsu and wrestling are two examples of self defense disciplines that employ grappling.

3.) Use of Weapons – This definition is pretty straight forward. These are specific tools
used to cause injury to opponents.

For thousands of years, people have been actively taking part in some form of Combat Contact Sports. The Ancient Olympic Games began as early as 776 BC. They were known to have participants of full contact sports. The Gladiators of Rome were often involved in duels and would fight each other to the death. Mixed Martial Arts arrived on the scene relatively recently around 1993, and is known to include a wide variety of Combat Disciplines amalgamated into one form of it’s very own Martial Art. It’s popularity has exploded recently with no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Jack Krohn asked:

Self defense weapons like stun guns, pepper sprays, personal alarms and tasers are inexpensive tools that civilians can use to defend themselves. Their purpose is to allow them time to get away from a dangerous situation to get help and perhaps escape with their life.

They have been used by law enforcement for decades with great success. Most self defense products are straightforward items but some are disguised. Why disguised? In an assault situation the element of surprise gives the user the advantage-an advantage that is very important.

Here’s a brief product review of some of the best.

1.Lipstick Pepper Spray-A 10% concentration of OC spray in a lipstick look alike container. Available in five colors and contains 20 one half second sprays with a range of 10 feet.

2.Pretender Stunner-A powerful 950,000 volt stun device in a package that looks just like a camera cell phone. It has a 12 LED flashlight, leatherette holster, and two levels of safety built in. Comes with a lifetime warranty.

3.Pepper Pager-A double barreled shot of 10% OC concentration in a package that looks just like a pager so you can wear it on your belt for fast access.

4.Flashlight Stun Tool-This high powered flashlight comes in two sizes eight at 80,000 volts and sixteen and one half inches at 200,000 volts. Both come with a 130 db alarm and lifetime warranties. Batteries are not included. Great stun device for truckers and folks who drive a lot.

5.Cell Phone Stun Gun-The most popular stungun in the world. A four function 800,000 volt stunner with and alarm, disable pin and bright flashlight. Free holster and free batteries included with a lifetime warranty.

6.Hot Walkers-10% OC spray inside one pound walking weights with foam covered grips. The perfect disguised pepper spray for walkers and joggers. It features a storage place for keys and money.

Don’t let the bad guys get a jump on you with the element of surprise. Turn the tables with these great disguised self defense items.

Kier Marston asked:

Krav Maga is designed to provide the most effective response for an individual across the whole range of situations in which one’s safety is in danger. Here is a brief discussion on four key areas that I’ve picked up on in the time I have been training in krav maga. These are not exhaustive of the principles behind krav maga but do give a good overview of some important considerations that go into training:

1) Attack vulnerable areas of the body. Consider that when someone attacks you and you are able to fight back, any action that you take can be said to have an ‘opportunity cost’, that is the cost of the action you didn’t take weighed up against the one you did. Given that when your life is in danger your aim is to survive it makes sense to ensure that your efforts in defending yourself are focused on inflicting as much damage on your attacker as possible so that they are neutralised and no longer a threat to you. As such krav maga encourages attacking the most vulnerable areas of the body. The groin strike for instance is a staple of many techniques as are eye gouges, kicks to the knees and all manner of strikes to the face targetting the nose, ears, temples and so on. When making combative moves such as punches, kicks, elbows etc the emphasis is not placed on set patterns or routines but on a continuous flurry of vicious and sustained attacks at the body’s weakest points to quickly overwhelm the opponent.

2) Go from defending to attacking ASAP. Again consider a situation where your life is threatened by an attacker. The ideal way to escape such a situation is to avoid as detailed below, or to escape from it quickly. Krav maga teaches numerous blocks and ways of coping with all the kinds of physical attack one can encounter. However the system teaches that we should block and attack simultaneously if possible, and if that is not possible then to counter attack as soon as possible and then make our escape. Why is this the case? Well to put it bluntly unless you are Neo you can’t stand and block a continuous flurry of attacks without getting hurt. Many knife attacks in particular involve not one, but numerous attacks in quick succession. As such counter attacking represents your best bet of blocking the attackers thought processes and allowing you to escape or neutralise him.

3) Three hundred percent defense. There are numerous methods of blocking any physical attack to your person. In krav maga you are trained to deal with attacks using three simultaneous strategies if possible. The first would be the hand or foot defense, which would involve blocking or deflecting a strike or maybe plucking or otherwise breaking a choke or similar attack. The second is the body defense and this simply involves turning or moving your body to remove it from where the attacker is attacking to. So for instance against a straight punch to your head you move your head and upper body to the side. The third principle is ‘moving off the line of attack’ and simply involves moving round your opponent so that the line of attack, that is the direction in which he is or can attack you is no longer going through you. This is important for numerous reasons. As stated above an attack will rarely make one discrete attack, there are likely to be several planned. Blocking or deflecting the initial attack and then swiftly moving to the attackers side and rear is a good way to avoid further danger and place your self in a prime position to neutralise the attacker, flee and also scan for further attacks in the blind spot that you previously had as he attacked you.

4) Situational awareness/scanning. A typical fight in a movie often involves two people facing each other and essentially slugging it out as if they were characters in Street Fighter. Numerous blows are thrown, blocked, taken and so on until a victor emerges. Being attacked in real life is rarely this simple. Attacks are made without warning, from all different angles and by single or multiple opponents. As such it’s very important to be continually aware of your surroundings and to be able to recognise danger signs and react instinctively. Krav maga teaches situation awareness with various kinds of drill and training. All students are also taught when attacked to move off the line of attack so that you can see into what was your blind spot and then to scan for further attackers, methods of escape, common objects to use as makeshift weapons etc. The importance of this cannot be stressed enough!

Damian Ross asked:

Today it seems like there’s a martial arts school on every block and many of them are of dubious quality. Most of the students are children, and they’re taught some form of combat sport. Some schools offer self defense training or promise a good workout, but few teach real combat martial arts. There was a time though when people did learn the practical skills they needed to survive a real street fight. Among the few instructors who truly understood combat martial arts and self defense was Charlie Nelson who took what he learned during World War II, and used it prepare the average citizen for hand to hand combat.

Charlie Nelson’s story begins in upstate New York where he grew up in a Catholic orphanage, and he joined the United States Marine Corp at the age of 19. While with the Marines he would receive the best close combat education possible. Before any close combat training, Charlie was good boxer. The first chance he had he joined Marine boxing team. This is when he learned from Colonel Anthony Drexel Biddle who had trained Marines in hand to hand combat for World War I. Biddle, and was teaching FBI agents at Quantico at the time.

As fate would have it, while at Quantico, Nelson would bunk with John Styers an expert in blade combat who would later author Cold Steel an excellent book on close combat with weapons. It was probably here that Nelson first learned the truth about self defense that would shape his life long view on combat; a street fight is completely different animal than a sports match.

Colonel Biddle wouldn’t be Nelson’s only teacher while in the Marines though. He would train with Sergeant Patrick Kelly who had served with the Fourth Marines stationed in China. Kelly had trained under Dermott O’Neill who also served in the city of Shanghai which at the time had the well earned reputation as the most violent city in the world. The Marines along with troops and police officers from many other nations assigned to the international city regularly battled violent street gangs and other criminals as they tried to maintain law and order as well prevent insurgences from taking the city. It was here the Marines would learn many important lessons from William Ewart Fairbairn and the Shanghai police department.

Even though Nelson wouldn’t meet Fairbairn directly, Fairbairn had a profound influence on how Nelson would learn to fight. During Fairbairn’s time as a police officer in Shanghai, he made an extensive study of many Asian martial arts in an effort to create a simple and effective combat martial arts system. He drew heavily on his Judo and Jujutsu experience, and stripped away any unnecessary ritual and movement, revealing a simple system for combat called Defendu. In addition to hand to hand combat training he also taught effective shooting and edged weapons methods (the Fairbairn fighting knife). He would later train spies and commandos in WWII. Nelson would draw on all of his influences in order to create his system for self defense, but he always gave credit to his mentors.

After serving honorably in WWII which included taking part in the battle of Guadalcanal with the First Marine Division Nelson retuned to New York and setup the “Charlie Nelson’s School of Self Defense Combat Jujitsu and Karate.” At the second floor school on West 72 Street in New York City the students would learn how to street fight, and Nelson abandoned traditional martial arts uniforms in favor of street clothes because he said that what people really wore when they fought. Every move he taught could be used by anyone regardless of size or strength, and all his training scenarios were grounded in reality based of his research into actual crimes. He taught people how to “fight not play games”.

Charles Nelson like some many others of his generation is no longer with us, but his work lives on with us in The Red Manual. The book is filled with useful techniques that will work against even the most violent assaults. Nelson makes martial arts practical to for the average citizen and teaches them how to deal with attackers armed with knifes, baseball bats, and even firearms. Even experienced martial artists like former Army Ranger and police officer Carl Cestari was taken down by his dirty fighting techniques by a much older Nelson. Cestari was so impressed he would become certified in Nelson’s system and include many of his techniques in his own. Unfortunately not everyone took notice of Nelson’s system, but if people did the criminals would be the ones living in fear. Nelson’s methods of self defense are all but forgotten.

There are a few who still teach some of the principles handed down by these for fathers of modern day self defense and reality martial arts. One such organization is The Self Defense Company. A global network of instructors dedicated to teaching the systems of proven self defense in programs that combine these valuable methods of combat with modern day systems of training.
