Self defense is such a broad term that the history of it cannot be pinned down in the least. It is safe to say, however, that the broad spectrum of self defense can be considered as having come from the dawn of time even the earliest forms of human had to learn how to protect themselves and teach their strategies to others. From there self defense evolved into less primitive forms and into delineated and disciplined forms, such as with martial arts. There really is a style of defense for everybody whether it be women’s self defense, kickboxing, street fighting or even martial arts.

Women’s self defense is one of the most popular forms of defense, and it too is a broad term in and of itself. Women’s self defense can employ many techniques from several different styles of general defense, including but not limited to martial arts. Women’s self defense mainly teaches women how to protect themselves against unwanted attackers and usually employs more evasive maneuvers rather than one-on-one strikes because the theory is that if a woman gets attacked, she is not going to want to fight her attacker face to face, she will need to employ a strategy that will best allow her to remove herself from the situation.

Women’s self defense can usually be taught in just a few classes and many local YMCA centers will offer it; it is the perfect solution for women that do not want to take up learning an entire martial art but still want to protect themselves.

Street fighting is another form of self defense that can sometimes be taught in classes, but to its namesake, is more often learned by other s on the street. Similar to the martial art Krav Maga, the sole purpose of street fighting is to bring down the opponent and incapacitate them so they are not able to attack again using any means available. If that means a throw to the ground, then that is what must be used but other times, more desperate or harsh methods must be used.

Unfortunately, street fighting (again, like Krav Maga) is one of the more brutal forms of self defense and it usually doesn’t matter if the opponent or attacker is seriously hurt or maimed; in fact, that is the objective most of the time. For this reason, street fighting is not one of the forms of defense that can double as a sport and practiced for fun. It is best to learn it and keep the knowledge tucked away for a time in which it is truly necessary.

It is a good idea for everyone to be schooled in at least one form of self defense. The main philosophy behind defense, regardless of the form, is this: do not hurt the other person unless it is absolutely unavoidable and necessary. Contrary to popular belief, if everyone learned just a little bit of proper self defense, there would be a lot less violence to go around.

For example, if a stalker is entering a woman’s home, the hidden spy camera can record the activity when she is gone. There are cameras that will record only when there are changes in the room, or others that will record at all times through a home computer.

You should always prepare yourself for any and all environments. Take where you work for example. If you work from home, you need to think about how to protect yourself there or if you work in an office, are you safe on your way to your car? Plan out and review a few various what if scenarios as a way to prepare yourself if the situation arises. Spot and address any surrounding environmental conditions that are subject to frequent change. Once you know what to prepare for, you can go over how to adapt your self-defense techniques to situations such as a dark stairwell, a poorly lit parking lot or even in the snow. Carefully take note of your surroundings looking for things such as potential escape routes if you are ever attacked. It is very important for you to never take familiar settings for granted. If you are attacked somewhere familiar to you, what is your plan for escape? What will you do if your first escape route is blocked? You better have a secondary plan even if it is something as easy as buying enough time to call 911. The goal is to increase your odds of coming out of the altercation unharmed. Always know where potential weapons can be found in your environment. Your home has items such as kitchen knives or the fireplace poker for example. Your car is full of potential weapons like the tire iron, windshield scraper or something from a grocery bag. Often times, its the less obvious items that end up saving your life such as using your wedding ring to scratch the attacker’s face. Now that you know what you will use as a weapon, think about how you will use it as a weapon. Certain items like dishes, ashtrays or vases can be thrown at an attacker. Hot liquid can be thrown into the face of an attacker to buy you enough time for an escape. You basically need to do whatever it takes. The final thing you need to always remember is that as you are scanning your environment for potential weapons, your attacker will be doing the same thing as well. Always remember the urgency of the situation.

Self defense is the act of protecting one’s self against physical force or the immediate threat of force. It can justify conduct which would otherwise give rise to criminal or civil liability. It can operate as a defense to virtually any criminal or civil wrong which involves the use or threat of physical force, such as assault, battery, and homicide.

To successfully argue self defense in a trial for homicide, the defendant must show that he or she acted with a genuine belief that they were in danger of death or severe bodily harm, that their conduct was necessary to prevent that harm, and that a reasonable person in the same situation would have had the same belief, and acted in a similar manner.

There are 2 basic types of self defense in a murder trial: perfect and imperfect. Self defense is perfect when the actor truly believed that they were in danger of death or grave bodily harm and that belief was reasonable. This requires the court to look at the defendant’s mental state (did they honestly believe that they were in danger?) and the surrounding circumstances (given the facts, was that belief reasonable?).

For example, suppose Al pulls out a gun and begins firing into a crowd. Bob, who happened to be in the line of fire, pulls out his own gun and shoots Al, killing him. Bob has acted in perfect self defense: he truly believed that he was threatened with death or severe bodily harm, and that belief was reasonable under the circumstances (he was being shot at, after all). If Bob were charged with murder, and he successfully proved the above facts, he would be completely exonerated.

Imperfect self defense is when a person acts with an honest belief that they are in immediate danger of death or severe bodily injury, but, given the facts, that belief was not reasonable. This does not completely exonerate the defendant, but if it is shown, it can reduce first-degree murder to voluntary manslaughter, a less severe crime.

Changing the above example slightly, suppose that Al pulls out a water pistol, and begins shooting it into the crowd. Bob honestly believes that the water pistol is filled with poison, and anybody who is sprayed with it will die, but he has no reasonable basis for this belief – he’s just paranoid. Acting on this belief, he shoots and kills Al. If Bob is charged with murder, he will be able to argue imperfect self defense, and if he proves the facts as stated above, he will not be convicted of first-degree murder, but of voluntary manslaughter.

To successfully prove self defense, one must also show that the amount of force they used was reasonable. Lethal force is only reasonable when the actor is threatened with death or severe bodily harm. If lesser harm is threatened, less force is justified. So, if Al runs toward Bob screaming that he’s going to beat Bob up, but there is no indication that he is going to try to kill Bob, Bob may only repel Al’s attack with the minimum amount of force necessary to protect himself, and no more. In such a case, Bob would probably not be justified in shooting Al, but he would be justified in using pepper spray to incapacitate him while he escapes, or using some other non-lethal force to defend himself.

In many states, a person must first attempt to escape the danger before resorting to physical force. This adds another requirement for a successful showing of self defense: escape was impossible. Some states, however, allow a person to stand his or her ground.

In the majority of states that require a person to first attempt to escape, there is an exception for a person who is attacked in his or her own home. Known as the “castle doctrine” (based on the idea that one’s home is his castle, and he should not be required to retreat from it, rather than defend it). However, the other rules associated with self defense are basically the same when it occurs in the actor’s own home: there must be an honest and reasonable belief about a threat of serious harm.

One single bad experience can ruin your child’s whole life. Hence always try and do your best to keep them safe.
3) Teach your child how to use a phone and his complete details like name, address, parents names etc. Let them know how strongly they depend on this information in case of a unfortunate situation. Also tell them that they need to run away in case they feel that they are uncomfortable in a particular situation
4) It’s very important that the children understand tat their body is very private to them and they should not allow any stranger to touch themselves. Make them understand that no matter what no one in their school, playground of even neighborhood is supposed to kiss or touch them in the areas which are covered by a swimming costume.
5) It’s very important that the children understand that shouting and screaming can be their weapons in case they feel they are under an attack as is running away. Enrolling them in some martial arts school is a very good idea. Also, be alert to notice any changes in his behavior. It might be a sign of harassment or bullying. Communication is very important make sure you explain to your children that they should openly talk to you even if someone threatens them against it.

I feel lucky that I am involved with martial arts and self defense training. Rather then just protecting people I teach people how to protect themselves, and I know all my instructors feel the same way.

Martial arts instructors used to be respected in society, but misinformation, McDojos, and incompetent frauds have turned people away. I see it as part of my mission to teach the truth about martial arts. Self defense is like any other consumer product, and the public needs to be informed.

I enjoy combative sports like boxing, karate, and of course judo, because they’re a lot of fun, and good for combat conditioning, but at the end of the day they’re just sports. People don’t know the difference between combat sports and self defense, and that can get them killed. In a street fight there are no rules and it is a matter of life and death. Techniques and strikes that would get you penalized in a competition are exactly what you need to do in a self defense situation.

Do you remember that kid growing up who said he knew karate and couldn’t fight worth a damn? The same holds true today when it comes to most martial arts “experts”. Most martial arts instructors have never been in a real fight, and deep down they know what they are teaching is useless outside of their martial arts school. They should be proud of their students for doing well in sport, but instead they tell them whatever they want to hear. I have instructors who teach martial arts like Tae Kwon Do, but they teach military hand-to-hand combat and self defense techniques separately.

Another thing a lot of these so-called masters say is that they either taught military personnel or they served themselves. They know you won’t check out their claims, and probably even believe the lies. If the Navy had as many SEALS as there are guys claiming to be SEALS, they would have divisions not teams. Also, even if someone served in the military, it doesn’t make their sport combative system any more deadly.

There isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t hear from someone in law enforcement, the military or just an average citizen who takes time out to say thanks. They made time to train and learn real world self defense and combat martial arts, and they made it home safe. It would be great if one day one of my students goes to the Olympics, but it is even more gratifying to know that my students are safe because of what they learned.

The truth is few people teach real self defense methods that can work anywhere, even if the odds are stacked against you. I make it clear to my students, what the differences are between civilized sport combat, and savage street fighting so they know what really works for self defense. Too many martial arts instructors don’t know the truth, and their students are the ones who pay the consequences.

There are a large number of self defense products and must haves that you must always have in order to protect yourself in case of an attack. These are time tested and non-lethal weapons allowing you to save the situation effectively, after all it’s better to have them and not need them, rather than not have them and need them. The self defense arsenal has many choices but some of the basic ones are:

1) Stun Guns: This is an inexpensive yet powerful self defense weapon. These directly affect the nervous system of the person they are used against, by giving a high voltage but low ampere shock. They generally have a power from 100,000 to 975,000 volts and are available in small sizes ranging from 3.5 to 6 inches. These weapons work by interrupting the tiny neurological pulses that travel through the body to control the muscle movement. When a stun gun is used against an attacker it makes him loose his balance and also causes complete disorientation. The resulting energy loss makes it difficult for him to move and function for several minutes leaving him confused and passive. Enough time for you to escape or seek help.

2) Pepper spray: It’s another great weapon of self defense. The spray comes in small sizes like the key chained ones to the bigger varieties as well. The key chained ones are a very practical choice as they can be easily carried as a part of the key ring and hung with the belt. They can be used at a 6-8 foot range and a burst of about 1-2 seconds will leave the attackers impaired and unable to move or function. Pepper sprays come with any of the following chemicals:

Orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile (CS)
Alphachloroacetaphenone (CN)
Oleoresin Capsicum (OC)

Out of these, OC is the most effective one. It acts faster than the others and leaves the attacker temporarily blind as it dilates the capillaries.

3) Taser Guns: These guns have almost 100% effectiveness. They combine the technology used in a traditional stun gun along with Electro-Muscular Disruption (EMD) technology. Not everyone is comfortable carrying a fire-arm for protection; a taser gun is a perfect alternative. Most have about 15 foot range and can provide up to 50 jolts. It can transmit about 50,000 volts through 2 inch layers of clothing. The electrical pulses from a taser gun affect the sensory and motor functions of the peripheral nervous system rendering the attacker incapable of carrying on with his horrendous plans.
