Jack Krohn asked:

For many years now I have been a strong advocate of school-age children learning some basic self-defense techniques. Some basic techniques are taught at an early age and reinforced periodically they will form a firm foundation for a self defense program that will last a lifetime.

The fact is knowing and practicing some street fighting techniques AKA ‘Jeet Kune Do’ will keep you out of 95 percent of all street confrontations. It also builds enormous self-confidence in your ability to defend yourself. This affects the way you walk and the way you carry yourself also known as body language which sends a message to would-be assailants that you are not to be messed with.

One of the theories of this style of defense is that you should do whatever you have to do to defend yourself regardless of technique. People who use it believe that the best defense is a strong offense. In most assault situations, the last thing an assailant expects is resistance from his victim.

It is a philosophy and a hybrid system of fighting founded by Bruce Lee over 40 years ago. It uses direct and straightforward movements based on a combination of fighting systems. Some people call it a “style without a style.” It is basically an openhanded system that works on the use of different tools for different particular situations from kicking, punching and grappling.

It is one of the most successful self-defense techniques ever developed because it is easy to use and easy to learn. It is a perfect learning tool for beginner men and women to either learn by themselves, with their friends in a group or as a family unit. What a great way to spend time with your family.

So get going and start learning some basic self defense techniques today.

Damian Ross asked:

Self defense can be broken down into two categories: Proactive and Reactive. The difference between the two is based on the amount of time and distance you have to react.

Proactive self defense is when you see the threat and you have the time to establish distance, put a strategy together and proceed accordingly. If you’re being fronted or you’re in a situation where you can identify the threat, you will have the time to prepare and position yourself for your initial offensive assault.

Reactive self defense is when your threat gets the jump on you and you’re taken by surprise. In this situation you must react as fast as possible. Since your assailant has the momentum you must react in a way that will give you the best chance to shift momentum in your favor and take the fight to the enemy.

So its stands to reason that proactive and reactive self defense must be trained and treated differently.

Proactive training: always train your strong or comfortable side and practice in combinations of 3 or 4 instinctive and convulsive techniques. Since you know where your target is, you have time to establish distance and take the fight to your target. In this situation, there’s no need to train both sides of your body, like you would in some Karate or Tae Kwon Do systems. You only need to train out of one “stance” or position in the way you feel most comfortable. Because when you’re stressed, you will go with what you feel most comfortable. You will react in the way that you feel you’ll have the best chance for success. For this reason there’s no need to practice both sides of your body in proactive self defense scenarios.

However, reactive self defense training is a different story. Instead of training 3 or 4 technique combinations you only have to train 2 techniques but you MUST train them from ALL directions (front, rear, left and right), since these are the only conceivable directions by which you can be attacked. When you’re taken by surprise you obviously don’t have the time to prepare your strategy, so you have to react in such away that allows you to mount a counter assault as fast as possible. For this you only have to train two techniques (which techniques depends on what you are comfortable with- you’ll discover that in your training) and practice them until they are instinctive and convulsive (what else is new).

Why only two techniques? Well, after you react and you’ve managed to get a couple of techniques off you will now move onto the offensive which is proactive self defense. At this point, the fight is under way, you now know where your threat is and you are going to proceed in a manner that feels most comfortable to you.

As a rule when you train you practice combinations of 3 to 4 techniques with your target in front of you. Then you train single and double combinations from all four directions and from mid range and close range.

How long do you do it for? Until it becomes “INSTINCTIVE AND CONVULSIVE”.

Matthew Carey asked:

Before you go out and purchase a self defense product it is important to understand that they are completely useless until you know how to use them properly. If you do not educate yourself about proper use there is the possibility that you will find yourself in more trouble than when you started. How does this make sense? For example if a person is carrying a gun but is not educated in using it, it is very possible it could be used against them by a criminal. This is what I like to call a false sense of security and is common place when someone purchases a weapon or a self defense product without learning proper use.

If you are in the market to purchase a self defense product it is direly important to educate yourself about proper use. The education could mean the difference between walking away from your assailant or being seriously injured by the attacker. It is extremely important to know that the self defense product itself doesn’t make you any stronger or smarter. They are designed to give you the advantage in situations where you are in danger.

Unfortunately many people that purchase self defense items fall into a mindset that I like to refer to as “Superman Syndrome” . This is where an individual feels they are almost invincible because of the self defense product they carry on them. This mindset is EXTREMELY dangerous because most people tend to either provoke a situation or throw their caution to the wind which will almost always result in that person being injured.

Before you make the commitment to buying any self defense product it is very important to do your research and become familiar with your desired product.
For example, if you choose to purchase pepper spray you should make sure you can answer the following questions:

* At what distance is this particular pepper spray effective.

* Is the pepper spray legal in my state?

* Where is the best place to aim your pepper spray?

* How long am I supposed to spray it for?

* Will the pepper spray be accessible when I need it?

* What should I do after I spray the attacker?

These questions may seem very simple but simple as they may be they are detrimental to your well being if you are using a self defense product. The example I gave you is for pepper spray but you can use pretty much the same questions for most other self defense products. The world we live in is not always the safest place and the criminals out there are getting smarter and smarter and chances are they have some experience dealing with victims that use self defense products. That is why it is extremely important to make sure you are more educated than the person attacking you. There internet is full of wonderful resources on using self defense products so before you make the commitment go ahead and do some homework and make sure you are well educated about the product you choose.

Pete Kauffer asked:

Many times in a self-defense situation an attack is from the rear. Martial arts practitioners are taught how to defend themselves if placed in a rear choke. One type of choke an assailant can use involves their hands only. In this article we will show how to defend if grabbed by the neck with the hands.

An attack from behind can occur at anytime. It is very easy if someone is not looking in the direction of the assault. A choke can take many forms and render a person unconscious rather quickly if the air is cut off. If a victim is attacked from the rear by only the hands of the attacker, either on the shoulders or on the neck, an escape can be rather simple.

The victim should step forward with one foot and turn the shoulder of the less dominant arm into the attacker. Raise the less dominant arm to block the attackers arm and push it out of the way. This should release the attackers hands from the neck and place the defender in a position to use a martial arts technique for a counter attack.

Blocking with the less dominant arm leaves the dominant, more powerful arm available for defense. Using any of a number of martial arts techniques with full force can render the aggressor defenseless. It can also provide an escape opportunity. A punch to the nose or throat or driving a finger, or fingers, into the eyes will cause quite a bit of pain. A kick to the shins, knees or groin can put them on the ground creating an opening to get away.

Heather Richards asked:

Overall, the most common reason that a woman would need to defend herself is in the case of violent sexual attack. According to George Mason University research, 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced sexual assault or ****! One-third of all women in the world seem to be an extraordinary number. In some countries where women’s rights have not evolved, one-third of adolescent girls report “forced sexual initiation”. One report publicized in 2000 claimed that more than 60% of victims in 7 countries knew their attacker. Another study performed in 2001 found that 24.7% of women interviewed in 8 different countries reported being the victim of sexual violence by the person they were dating.

We rarely expect to be assaulted by our friend or lover, but this is the scenario all too often. There seems to be no way of predicting or preventing this situation, and so our only hope is to know how to defend ourselves. Since the possible situations vary greatly, from unacceptable sexual advances to extreme cases of aggressive and violent attack, there are also many different techniques to deter an attack or defend yourself physically.

Techniques range from simple eye-contact and straight-forward verbal response to training in martial arts techniques. In general, physical self defense techniques for women should be a little different from techniques taught in most martial arts classes. Instructors must consider that a woman will be smaller than, and not usually as strong as her attacker. Techniques must also revolve around possible scenarios, teaching you to make the most of your position and get the upper hand on your assailant. They must also keep it simple, nothing too technical. This is not because women can’t easily learn technical martial arts, but because anyone is not going to be calm enough to execute a technical move efficiently in such a high-stress situation.

W.O.W (Women Only Workout) claims that by physically defending herself against an attacker, 85% of women will escape the situation and 50% of the time all it may take to avoid an attack is to yell or scream. However, I wouldn’t rely on a 50/50 chance of survival, so it’s important to find a self defense technique that will work for you. With all of the options available, there is something for everyone, some classes even incorporate Yoga (see related article) to help train their students in self-discipline and enable them to have a clear head when attacked. Motivational seminars about confidence and empowerment can also be helpful. If you choose to train in a martial arts studio, it’s important to choose one that is not oriented toward competition (unless you have such goals), those that advertise self defense directly would be best. Sometimes your local police department may offer classes as well.

Since you are already online, it’s a good idea to start your research here. You may want to watch videos, read How-To articles, order a book or purchase an eBook; there is an abundance of information at your fingertips already. Please feel free to return and let others know about your experiences!

Jack Krohn asked:

Self defense products by definition are nonlethal in nature. They represent a very viable alternative to the use of deadly force in self-defense. Law enforcement officers worldwide have been using a variety of self defense products for years. Products like pepper sprays, stun guns, batons and tasers have a great track record of success.

Over the years they have made their way into the civilian community with equal success. It is very difficult to go a day without reading another story about how a self defense product was used to protect someone.

Pepper sprays are probably the most widely used self defense tools in the world with stun guns coming in a close second. I actually recommend, particularly for women, that they carry both a pepper spray and a stun gun. Each of them is small enough and inexpensive enough to not break the bank and give you a backup means of protection in case one fails you.

Self defense items are meant to give you time to escape the dangerous situation and seek assistance or just escape. None of the self defense products on the market today cause any long-lasting damage to an assailant.

Many people ask me what is the best value self defense products? Answer is simple. The multifunction stun gun can protect you in four ways. First and foremost it has 4.5 million volts enough to melt the worst of any bad guys. It also has a super bright LED flashlight and red flashing emergency lights. And finally it has a loud alarm.

The most popular feature of the Multifunction Stun Gun is the disable pin wrist strap. This disengages a pin in the stun gun that makes it unusable should an assailant take it from you. As a bonus it is fully rechargeable which of course saves you money. It has a lifetime warranty and comes with a nylon holster. At $59.95 it is the best value in self defense products today.

Mario Andreis asked:

In order to be able to respond to any kind of an attack, the first thing one should do is to prepare psychologically for possible confrontation. One should become aware that in any given moment he could face a danger coming from another human being. Acknowledging this is the first step in achieving the readiness to an attack.

It must be noted though, that emotional awareness on itself will not necessarily guarantee the ideal physical reaction even though this is implied in most martial arts schools and conventional self-defense programs. Emotional and psychological readiness must be viewed as an absolutely necessary brick in the wall of your self-defense. The rest of this self defense wall consists of course of physical condition and training. Most self-defense courses and trainings lack real life pressure and stress one is submitted to during the attack. For this reason special attention should be paid to making the circumstances as real as they can get while performing the drills and trainings.

Also there should be many scenarios which can occur in real life simulated. The more situations you experience, the more ready for the street you’ll be. Many times self-defense courses consist of drills and trainings too static for the real attack situations. Such courses may make you feel better but they may also tell you a lie. You may think that you’re somewhat ready because you invested in course and because you took some lessons but in reality you may be even more endangered. Why? Because you’re convinced that you know how to do things when attacked while in fact your false defense will only make the assailant angrier and more determined to do you harm.

So if you’ve learned anything from this article, then you should know by now that before thinking that you’re ready to face the attacker you need to:

- Adjust your everyday-thinking to real life circumstances, that is – you should live with the thought in your head that there is a threat outside, and that threat can become real at any given moment

- You should be prepared to react in case of violent attack, you should think about what and how the things should be handled if they happen

- You should think about what actions you would be capable of taking. Would you critically injure another person? Would you kill another human being?

- You should take classes with professional people who know what they’re teaching you. Some swinging hands in the air will not help you one bit!

- It’s a real life you live, no matter whether you’re ready or not for it!

If you’re not a physical type of person, if you’re not physically strong nor you have the time or the genes to become strong then you could use some kind of self-defense weapons.

Some very popular are: pepper spray, taser, stun gun and even guns and knives. Yes these can really help you but make no mistake – you should by all means take the lessons on how to use these kinds of weapons. If you don’t take time to learn the proper usage of weapon then you risk even worse consequences than what you would be in case you have no weapons at all. Remember, you better not carry any kind of weapon around that you’re not ready to use and that you know not how to use it the right way. One of the most suitable gadgets for this purpose is a pepper spray. The effect on the attacker is devastating but not fatal. Did you know that it takes more to recover from pepper spray effects than from taser?

Think about the facts of self-defense depicted in the paragraphs above and stay safe.
