Jack Krohn asked:

The need for self defense has been around for a long time, and it is not getting any less important as the years go by. There are many different ways people choose to keep themselves safe. Some learn physical self defense techniques, while others rely on disguised self defense products or just normal self defense products.

The bad guys use surprise as a major tactical strategy to gain the upper hand. Using a disguised self defense weapons can turn the tables in your favor exactly what you want in an assault situation-a tactical advantage.

Some rely on taking preventative measures to keep themselves safe. These people use alarms and security devices, but one can never be sure this will protect against an attack. The safest route is to have some form of self defense prepared in case of an attack.

Popular self defense items include pepper sprays and stun guns. However, many people are afraid that an attacker will realize they possess a self defense product before they have a chance to use it. Companies make disguised self defense products to guard against this worry. Pepper spray can look like an ordinary pen or pager. That way, people can carry pepper spray in their pocket or purses, and an attacker would have no idea.

Some of the most popular are key chain personal alarms. These let off a high-pitched alarm that startles attackers and alerts people around a victim. There are many other disguised self defense products like lipstick pepper spray and a camera cell phone stun gun.

Recently, a company has come out with a cell phone stun gun. This stun gun looks like an ordinary cell phone, but it does not function as an ordinary cell phone. It is really one of many disguised self defense products.

The gun projects 800,000 volts of electric shock into an attacker. It comes with an anti-theft wrist strap for security reasons. If the wrist strap is removed, the gun will no longer stun. It also will emit a high-pitched alarm when the wrist strap is pulled. It also has an LED flash light. With so many self defense tools, the world can be a much safer place.

self defense

Ivan A Cuxeva asked:

When it comes to self-defense there are mixed feelings as to which is the best way to protect ourselves from any possible danger, a person or place which might get robbed will need a completely different method of self-defense in case of an attack, a person who goes out to the woods in order to get some timber or to go hunting might be faced with a dangerous animal such as a bear. As you see there are different cases and scenarios which require different methods of self-defense, let’s go ahead and discuss some of them.

It is a very natural feeling to want to defend our things, our loved ones and ourselves when a dangerous situation arises for instance, when a woman is attacked during the night while walking back home from the gym or any other place for that matter, what most people would immediately recommend is to change the schedule and avoid going to such place during the night. Changing schedules might be in for some people however, for others it isn’t, some people will obviously want to protect themselves and overcome their fears instead of living with a constant preoccupation of the many dangers of the world.

When people take action to protect themselves against other humans it is very common to hear that an individual who wants to protect himself/herself will end up signing up to attend personal defense classes, this is always great knowledge to have but, others would prefer not to get physical and avoid any type of violence which obviously rules out the possibility of acquiring a weapon such as a gun or any other fire arm. The best possible solution in this case is to use what is popularly referred to as pepper spray.

Pepper spray is a common substance which is used for self-defense purposes, it can be used against animals and humans if they become violent, aggressive or become a threat. The main active ingredient found in pepper spray is called “oleoresin capsicum” — this chemical is often linked to chile peppers, chile is not to be confused with chili peppers which are a mixture of spices, meat, tomatoes, beans, etc.

Pepper spray comes in the form of aerosol and in very few and rare instances it has turned lethal, for the most part though pepper spray is a very effective self-defense tool which can deter attackers and keep a person safe. According to the Scoville scale which rates capsaicin heat in peppers, the hottest type of Chile is the habanero and it is rated at 300,000 units, a pepper spray on the other hand is rated between 2-5,000,000 units which is the reason why it is so effective. Once it is used against a person or an animal it acts as an inflammatory agent that when he comes in contact with the nose, eyes, lungs and other parts of the persons body it causes immediate capillary dilation. In most states pepper spray is not considered a lethal weapon however, in other parts of the US such as Massachusetts you do need a fire arms ID card if you want to have this personal protection item. Pepper spray is mostly used by women because it is a very convenient object to carry inside a purse and can effectively stop an attacker in his tracks.

Caitlina Fuller asked:

Women need to defend themselves from individuals who might want to cause them harm. As a result all women need their own personal security devices to help them defend predators, thieves, or would be attackers. There are all kinds of personal security devices women may use to protect themselves. Some of those include pepper spray, stun guns, and stun batons.

Pepper Spray

Pepper spray is an excellent option for women to carry in their purses or even on their key chains. This spray comes in a small aerosol can that when the button is pressed a stream of pepper spray ejects. If aimed at the attacker’s face and eyes it will cause them to stop in pain. The spray does not cause long-term harm but it does cause immediate pain that in most cases will stop the attacker in his tracks and give the woman time to escape. If you buy a pepper spray to carry with you then you should try it out once or twice to ensure you know how to use it and that the spray works well.

Stun Guns

Stun guns are another personal security device that women should consider carrying with them. A stun gun is a small hand held device that delivers a high voltage shock when it is touched to an individual for approximately three to five seconds. Once shocked the individual will lose control of their muscles, lose their balance, become confused and disoriented, and fall to the ground. The individual will recover completely within five to 10 minutes, but this is enough time for the woman to get away.

Stun Baton

A stun baton is a long metal baton, similar to a flashlight that has an electric shock head. This baton allows you to keep an attacker at arm’s length and you can shock them without having to be very close to them. This is an excellent way to protect yourself and fend off would be attackers.

These are just some of the security devices available for women. There are other options available as well that will help women protect themselves in a scary situation. Hopefully every women out there carrying a stun gun, stun baton, or pepper spray will never need to use it. But in the case where it becomes necessary it could be a lifesaver. All women should carry some form of self-defense with them at all times, especially if they travel alone at night.

self defense

Imran Al asked:

Self defense is an art of defending oneself from physical harm. It may be considered as a force used in times of danger. An act of self defense may be of two types, unarmed and armed.

The act of defending using body parts is considered as unarmed self defense. This includes various arts of fighting. One of the major self defense techniques is Martial Arts. The individual is subjected to stress and the proper use of gross motor skills is taught to control the stress level and react accordingly. Nowadays, many Martial Art training schools follow the same technique to teach people of all age group the art self defense.

Another type of self defense is an armed self defense wherein the individual is allowed to carry weapons and use them appropriately under self defense situation. Some countries have legalized the use of weapons like knives, firearms, batons for the sake of self defense, whereas some countries issue license for the use of the same. Weapons may be categorized under lethal and non-lethal weapons. Lethal weapons may sometimes be fatal for the users too and hence non-lethal weapons are considered more for self defense. These include pepper spray and stun guns. Pepper spray contains irritating chemicals that can be sprayed directly onto the opponent’s eyes and this may give time for the individual to react. The stun gun however produces electric shock and so it must be in contact with the opponent.

Self defense may be engaged to defend one’s own life or the lives of others in times of violence. It a spontaneous activity and is encountered only when the individual is subjected to stress. The unarmed self defense techniques are the most commonly used act during these situation as people do not have rights to use weapons. People who do not learn the art of self defending improvise their own ways to defend themselves from their opponents. In this situation they use everyday objects like heavy objects and knives for their safety, or else they try to use the body force to overcome their opponent in times of fight.

Self defense may be considered as an art which people either learn or improvise to defend themselves from certain situations which they encounter in their day to day life. Self defense whether armed or unarmed is legal only if it is used for the right reason and if it could be justified.

Imran Al asked:

Self defense comes into play where the attacker and the victim come in confrontation. In the act of defending oneself a victim may use self defense. No matter how much efficient a person is in using methods or forms of self defense, there is a 100% risk of getting hurt in a physical fight that avoids such attacks. However, a victim may employ some tools like pepper spray, impact device, sonic alarms, dogs etc to increase the chance of success over opponents.

A smart person should never initiate or escalate situation. They should avoid the offender, no matter how much pride is bruised, however the self defense should come into play only if the offender tries to assault physically. This is the case where the appropriate methods of self defense should be implied or tools to self defense should be used.

A person should try to de-escalate the situation enforced by the offender. If regular attempts fail then the victim should be aware of the fact that they are innocent and steps taken to avoid the circumstances are on their part. Firstly, the victim should try and make out whether he is attempting to assert his dominance or prove some irrelevant point. If the offender is less harmful then the choice of less lethal tools may be a good medium of attack. Improvisation of tools may be a good alternative if the victim is not carrying anything. One should not engage in a physical fight unless he/she is a professional in that, if not then the chances of getting hurt and losing the fight is the maximum.

One should remember that their most important weapon is their own intellect and senses. A person who has full control over his senses is always aware of what surrounds them. These situations arise spontaneously and so one must exercise his/her sense so as to stay aware and keep away from these circumstances. If there is no need of a fight, then there is no need to initiate one. The victim should have strong instincts to decide in these situations.

Many people decide to make early confrontation, but that may not be possible in all the cases. There are some people who come into negotiation with the offender, but that does not mean that the victim has accepted defeat. It is just that under certain situation it is smart to negotiate on terms based on the offender, but this too is limited till the time the offender decides to harm the victim physically. In that case, the victim finds no other alternative than to use self defense.

Jeffrey S. Anderson asked:

Many of us believe in the importance of personal self defense. But we may not have skills or training in karate, boxing, or other systems we normally associate with personal self defense, and rely instead upon the advantage of weaponry.

Weapons are intended to give us extra power and leverage, but they are not always where we need them when we need them in an emergency personal self defense situation. Many who own firearms, for example, leave them locked up at home. Others buy personal self defense products like pepper spray, but don’t have those weapons with them 24/7. So it is an important part of any personal self defense mindset to learn to recognize and use improvised weapons.

For example, here are 5 improvised weapons that can be used for personal self defense:

1) A rolled-up magazine or newspaper can be used to block or strike.

2) Entire personal self defense schools are dedicated to using walking sticks and canes as weapons.

3) Cell phones for calling and camera phones for taking pictures, can be important personal self defense tools when reporting crimes.

4) Pencils, pens, forks, and spoons are often readily available for personal self defense, in lieu of knives.

5) The belt worn to hold up your pants can be used as a powerful personal self defense weapon, to lash or strike.

Look around yourself and ponder objects in your everyday environment. Make a mental list of personal self defense weapons you can identify, and then begin to practice using these familiar objects in unfamiliar ways. You may be surprised how many ordinary household items are actually extraordinary personal self defense weapons right there at your fingertips.
