TL Kleban asked:

How safe are you everyday once you step outside the door of your home? Many people make the naive mistake thinking that nothing bad can happen to them but the reality is if you were walking to your car and were attacked, can you protect yourself? Do you have a plan for defense? Unfortunately, most people are not and if you are among them, be aware that you put yourself at risk every day.

The study of self-defense cannot be easily defined with quick, easy, and over simplistic solutions. It is more along the lines of being prepared when you encounter an attacker and nothing is more important to your preparation as studying your everyday environment for escape routes or anything else that can help you during your time of conflict.

Here are some ways for you to be prepared to protect yourself during your everyday life:

You should always prepare yourself for any and all environments. Take where you work for example. If you work from home, you need to think about how to protect yourself there or if you work in an office, are you safe on your way to your car? Plan out and review a few various what if scenarios as a way to prepare yourself if the situation arises. Spot and address any surrounding environmental conditions that are subject to frequent change. Once you know what to prepare for, you can go over how to adapt your self-defense techniques to situations such as a dark stairwell, a poorly lit parking lot or even in the snow. Carefully take note of your surroundings looking for things such as potential escape routes if you are ever attacked. It is very important for you to never take familiar settings for granted. If you are attacked somewhere familiar to you, what is your plan for escape? What will you do if your first escape route is blocked? You better have a secondary plan even if it is something as easy as buying enough time to call 911. The goal is to increase your odds of coming out of the altercation unharmed. Always know where potential weapons can be found in your environment. Your home has items such as kitchen knives or the fireplace poker for example. Your car is full of potential weapons like the tire iron, windshield scraper or something from a grocery bag. Often times, its the less obvious items that end up saving your life such as using your wedding ring to scratch the attacker’s face. Now that you know what you will use as a weapon, think about how you will use it as a weapon. Certain items like dishes, ashtrays or vases can be thrown at an attacker. Hot liquid can be thrown into the face of an attacker to buy you enough time for an escape. You basically need to do whatever it takes. The final thing you need to always remember is that as you are scanning your environment for potential weapons, your attacker will be doing the same thing as well. Always remember the urgency of the situation.

Imran Al asked:

Self Defense is as important for children as it is for the adults. All children should be given complete exposure to self defense tactics by not only the parents but also by guardians and educators etc. It’s important that every child knows the basics of self defense. Since children are all the more vulnerable to attacks, their self defense involves training about abduction, sexual abuse, strangers, bullies and bullying and internet. Take time to give as much knowledge as possible to your child so that he knows what to do in case of an adverse situation. Basics of self defense for children:

1) Consider the situations where your child is most vulnerable to an attack. It can be in his school, playground, in the street or even in the house. Make sure you educate your child about the perils he can encounter in all the places and how to save the situation. The idea is not to scare him but to empower him in case need arises. It’s important that the kids understand what stranger means and how they should stay away from them.
2) Try not to leave your children alone especially in unknown areas like yards and grounds etc. Always try and keep them under your supervision, in cases where this is not possible tell them clearly that you are not going to be around for some time and they need to be vigilant. One single bad experience can ruin your child’s whole life. Hence always try and do your best to keep them safe.
3) Teach your child how to use a phone and his complete details like name, address, parents names etc. Let them know how strongly they depend on this information in case of a unfortunate situation. Also tell them that they need to run away in case they feel that they are uncomfortable in a particular situation
4) It’s very important that the children understand tat their body is very private to them and they should not allow any stranger to touch themselves. Make them understand that no matter what no one in their school, playground of even neighborhood is supposed to kiss or touch them in the areas which are covered by a swimming costume.
5) It’s very important that the children understand that shouting and screaming can be their weapons in case they feel they are under an attack as is running away. Enrolling them in some martial arts school is a very good idea. Also, be alert to notice any changes in his behavior. It might be a sign of harassment or bullying. Communication is very important make sure you explain to your children that they should openly talk to you even if someone threatens them against it.

Imran Al asked:

Here are some simplistic dos about self defense which can help you defend yourself.

1) Kick his knees or stomp on his feet: If you perform these two acts correctly and preferably in succession then he is likely to get hurt and allow you to escape. Whatever you do strike real hard so that you don’t end up angering him with your light movements
2) Fight and flight: There is no better rule to self defense then running for your life. If you hit him well enough chances are that he will not be able to put up a good chase, not for the initial few seconds at least.
3) This is not a winning game: When you protect yourself against an attacker it’s important to realize that this is not a match where you are supposed to win and he is supposed to concede defeat. Just fight back as much as needed and then make an exit from the situation, you do not know how he might retaliate and may even be armed
4) Stay Calm: It’s very important to stay calm and not appear afraid in front of the attacker. This is a very difficult thing to do especially when you now that the situation can take a turn for worse any time. However having control on your wits is sure to have some psychological pressure on him. After all he is also the one who can get hurt.
5) Go for the eyes: Eyes are a very sensitive part, no matter how silly this may sound go for his eyes, attack them and jab your fingers into them. This will leave him in a blurred and disoriented.
6) It’s OK to be hit: When you know that you are in an unfortunate situation which demands immediate use of self defense tactics then prepare yourself to be hit too. It’s not a fun experience of course, but that doesn’t mean you have to immediately give up. Put up a fight as much as possible and do not give up.
7) Hit first: When you know that you are stuck and there is no way you can get out by not being hurt then go for the hit first. This will give you a chance to run while he recovers from the strike. It might sound difficult but it’s better to hit first than put up a fight after being hit when you will hardly have a chance to recover.
8) Elbow his stomach: This is a great way to defend yourself especially when you are grabbed from behind. This can be combined with stomping his feet as well. Do both the things with full force and you might have some time to escape from his clutches.
9) Keep your hands up, your face covered and teeth clenched: Like boxers always keep your hands up, this will help block his blows and also save your face from being hit which is also a very sensitive area. Also keep your teeth clenched so that your jaw is less affected during a strike.
10) Know your limits, this is not a movie: If you have to fight back then do not expect yourself to break into martial arts Bruce Lee style. Do not attempt to do something too adventurous just because it looked very effective in a movie. He might be having weapons for all you know. Also, once you strike, make it hard and repetitive so that you are sure he is hit otherwise you will have him all the more angered.
